Dear Friends of the Sports Association,
It's the time of the year to give thanks and we are thankful for all of our athletes, coaches, volunteers, friends, partners and donors who together, make the Sports Association such a special program. Thank you all for your support! We are grateful to have a part in helping our participants elevate their lives through adaptive sports. This month, we are sharing news from our recent special events as well as some exciting news from our wheelchair rugby team.
Next Thursday is our Adaptive Ski & Snowboard Discovery Night which is a great opportunity to learn about the sport and how to get involved. Our regular fall programs have started and we are offering programs in golf, archery, boccia, yoga and virtual boxing, along with our team sports in wheelchair rugby and sled hockey. Introducing the GAYLORD WARRIORS!
We are excited to announce an official partnership between the Gaylord Jammers Wheelchair Rugby Team and the NY Warriors Wheelchair Rugby Team. Our new team name is the GAYLORD WARRIORS! 
The two teams have combined forces to provide competitive opportunities for all the players. Both teams have a long history of competitive wheelchair rugby and have been training and competing together since last year. The team is registered with the United States Wheelchair Rugby Association (USWRA) and competes in games throughout the US. Our first tournament was the Rugby Rampage on October 21-22 hosted by the Northeast Passage Wildcats in NH, where we debuted our new name and finished 3rd in the tournament!  Our second tournament was the Beast of the East on November 11-12 in Philadelphia which brought together teams from New Hampshire, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington DC and North Carolina. Good luck this season Gaylord Warriors!!  The team practices on Sundays in North Haven, CT with head coach Dominic Colavito. We are always open to new players. Contact us to learn more!
Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey Team
The Gaylord Wolfpack's sled hockey season is underway!  The team has competed in two league competitions so far as part of the Northeast Sled Hockey League (NESHL) in Metropolitan Division. Our first league games were right here in CT at the newly renovated East Haven Veterans Memorial Ice Rink. Our second league weekend was held in Philadelphia. Our next home games will be held on January 6 & 7 at Choate in Wallingford. Come cheer for us!  Adaptive Mountain Bike Kick Off Event
We were so excited to be a part of the Adaptive Mountain Bike Trails Kick Off Event on Saturday, October 28th at Oxford High School. This event was developed to support the  adaptive mountain biking trails project at Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary in Oxford, CT! Lots of folks were able to try out adaptive mountain bikes from and there was tons of excitement to get out on the trails! Thank you to Joe Lanier for spearheading this project, Oxford High School, Housatonic Valley Chapter of NEMBA for volunteering and the amazing Oxford Youth Conservation Corps for their work building these top notch trails!
 Veterans Fishing Tournament
The Veterans Fishing Tournament held on September 19th was a huge success with 
24 veterans in attendance!  Volunteer boat captains were each paired with a veteran and  enjoyed a day on the water, fishing on Congamond Lake in Southwick, MA. The day ended with a weigh-in and awards luncheon. Congratulations to veteran John Samson and boat captain Abe Kalechman for their first place finish with a combined weight of 12.32 lbs. Congratulations to second place winner, veteran Mark Brucker and Boat Captain Scott Janus and third place winner, veteran Kat Swenson and Boat Captain Mike Shimels. Kat and Mike also were the lunker winners with a single fish weight of 4.10 pounds. Gaylord Bullseye Classic Archery Tournament
The second annual Gaylord Bullseye Classic was held on October 17th at Gaylord Hospital and was a huge success! Archers competed in an individual scoring round for a total of 30 arrows at a distance of 18 meters from the shooting line. Archers were divided into compound and recurve categories based on their bow type. There were 5 archers in each category. This tournament was based on USA Archery Para Competition rules and all archers shot independently with modifications if needed. Congratulations to repeat champion Frank Padro with a score of 266, followed by Cameron Senna and Chelsea Michaud in the compound category. Rafael Reyes was the winner of the recurve category with a score of 105 followed by Edwin Quinones and Earla Lanier.  Visit our photo album to view more images from the event.  
  Ken Murphy Memorial Open Golf Tournament 
The Sports Association welcomed over twenty adaptive golfers to the Farms Country Club for the Ken Murphy Memorial Open Golf Tournament (KMMO) on August 22, 2023. Congratulations to tournament winners, Ray Radovich and David Allen! We would like to thank the Farms Country Club for their hospitality and look forward to next year's tournament. The KMMO wrapped up our adaptive golf club season after 9 adaptive golf club outings at Sleeping Giant Golf Course, The Farms Country Club and Orange Hills Golf Course.
  "For the Love of the Game" Award 
Congratulations to Jay Greenberg who was presented with the “For the Love of the Game” award this year. This award is given to an individual who “exemplifies a tireless passion for the sport of golf.” Jay has been volunteering with the Gaylord Sports Association since 2015 and is a volunteer golf club coach and golf clinic instructor.Thank you Jay for eight years of sharing your expertise with us! Jay was presented with the award at our November Golf Clinic. 
  Dave Parcells Madison Triathlon
Congratulations to all the competitors in the Dave Parcells Madison Triathlon on September 9th! We had 7 adaptive athletes who either completed the full course or competed as part of a relay team. Thank you to our coach, Doug Levens, our volunteer guides, and all the athletes for a successful season!  We are already looking forward to next year!
Waterski Clinics
Two Adaptive Waterski Clinics were held this summer at Pachaug Pond in Griswold. Skiers practiced their skills from a sit-ski, on the boom, and even on a slalom ski! Thank you to the 20+ volunteers who helped to make these clinics possible, including a new group of volunteers from Pachaug! The clinics have been hosted at the Joly Family Cottage for over ten years!  Check out the photos from this year's clinics here.   
The Hartford Equipment Gifting
Sports has the power to change lives and The Hartford is making this a reality. Ten Gaylord Sports Association athletes were surprised with adaptive equipment at three different events including the Gaylord Gauntlet in June, The Hartford Golf Tournament in September and the The Hartford's Flex-Abilities Network (FAN) presentation in November. Congratulations to Chelsea Michaud, Tara McNeil, Josh Buglione, Kelly McDermott, Jessica Mercado, Rachel Grusse, Collin McSpirit, Rome Leykin, Justina Pelletier and Robert Tiger Jenner who all have been gifted new adaptive equipment for their sport. A huge thank you to The Hartford and Move United Sport for their incredible support of adaptive athletes!
2023 Grants - THANK YOU
We are grateful to all our sponsors, donors, grant funding sources and partners who make the Gaylord Sports Association programs possible! In this issue, we would like to thank this year's grant funding sources including Move United & The Hartford Adaptive Equipment Grant, Move United Veterans Adaptive Sports Grant (through the VA Adaptive Sports Grant Program), the Wolfpack Community Foundation and Southern Connecticut State University's Institute for Adapted Sports and Recreation. Through this support, these organizations have helped our athletes to realize the possibilities, embrace new challenges, reach beyond the barriers and re-define their ability through adaptive sports.
