The Sports Association is dedicated to improving the lives of persons with physical disabilities through adaptive sports and recreation.

Dear Friends of the Sports Association, 

We have lots of fun events coming up this fall!  Come try the sport of Boccia!  Check out our golf and archery clinics. 

The ski season is right around the corner!  Join us for the the annual Skiing Discovery Night on Dec. 12 and learn about the trips planned for the 2020 season. 
 
The 2019 Gaylord Rugby Invitational is scheduled for Nov. 23-24, 2019.  Come out and cheer on the teams! Volunteers are also needed.

News and Updates
Wheelchair Rugby Season Begins
The Gaylord Jammers travelled to Rochester, NY on Oct.12-13 to compete in the Wrecking Ball Wheelchair Rugby Tournament hosted by the WNY Wreckers.  We had a great time and learned a lot from our teammates from the Oscar Mike Militia and the Montreal Wheelchair Rugby Team who joined us during the tournament.  Our next tournament is November 2 & 3 at UNH hosted by Northeast Passage.  If you are interested in playing wheelchair rugby, please contact the Sports Association for more information.
Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey
The Gaylord Wolfpack started the 2019-2020 season in September with league games at the Amelia Park Ice Arena in MA, followed by games this month in West Springfield, MA.  The Wolfpack is off to a great start this season, winning all their games so far.  The next league games are November 17th at the Camden Ice Vault in Hallowell, ME.  Thank you to Terry Downey from the Spaulding Shamrocks for the great photos from the league games at Amelia Park.  If you would like to learn more about the Sled Hockey Team, or are intersted in playing, please contact the Sports Association.

2019 Gaylord Rugby Invitational
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our annual Wheelchair Rugby Tournament will be held November 23-24, 2019 at the Sports & Medical Sciences Academy in Hartford, CT. Games will begin Saturday at 9:00 AM and will run through 4:00 PM and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM.  Join us to see the action and cheer on the teams! 

We are currently recruiting volunteers for this event.  Volunteers will assist with set up, scoring the games, meals, and other support tasks as needed.  All job duties will be explained the day of the tournament.  Please take a look below and let us know if you would like to volunteer for a specific role and time. To sign up as a volunteer, please call us at 203-284-2772 or email sports@gaylord.org.

Adaptive Skiing Discovery Night

The 2020 winter ski season is right around the corner and the Sports Association would like to invite you to our Adaptive Skiing Discovery Night! Join us and learn about adaptive skiing and the Sports Association Ski Club.

Upcoming Programs
Boccia Open Play

Come try the Paralympic Sport of Boccia! Boccia is a throwing sport of precision which has been adapted for athletes with mild to severe physical disabilities using a few modifications. The object is to place balls closest to the target ball by throwing or rolling the ball using a ramp. Games are played one on one, in pairs, and teams of three. All are welcome to learn this game of skill and strategy!  Contact the Sports Association at 203-284-2772 to register.

Seated Yoga Classes
Come take part in a Gaylord Sports Association seated yoga class! Yoga leads to many benefits including improved flexibility, circulation, posture, and strength. Practicing adaptive yoga can be modified for any participant, including those recovering from strokes, surgery, MS and arthritis and is open to individuals with physical disabilities or visual impairments.

Golf Clinics
The Sports Association Adaptive Golf Clinics at Gaylord Hospital are designed to provide adult golfers with physical disabilities and visual impairments the opportunity to work with a trained professional to adapt the sport of golf and overcome barriers. Participants will receive instruction from golf professionals as well as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists to give the best possible instruction and support independence. Beginners and returning participants are welcome and all equipment is provided.

Archery Clinics

The Sports Association Adaptive Archery Clinics provide the opportunity for individuals with physical disabilities to learn about and participate in the sport of archery.  Participants in the clinics will receive instruction from trained archery professionals as well as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist to give the best possible instruction to support independence in the activity. This clinic is appropriate for individuals ranging from beginner to advanced skill levels and provides standard archery equipment, adaptive archery equipment, and instruction.

Indoor Kayak Classes

The Sports Association’s Adaptive Kayak Classes are designed to provide adults with physical disabilities the opportunity to learn or re-learn to kayak.  Certified kayak instructors teach the basics of paddle strokes, kayak equipment, safety and how to adapt or modify for individual needs.  This is a two part class during two consecutive weeks. Once a participant completes both classes, they will be eligible to participate in open water paddles.

 *Essential Eligibility Requirements Apply for participation. Please contact the Sports Association for details*.

About Our Program and Events

The Sports Association is a program of Gaylord Hospital and is based out of Wallingford, CT. We are a Paralympic Sport Club and chapter member of Disabled Sports USA. We serve adults with physical disabilities and visual impairments and welcome new members to join us. All programs require registration and some programs have registration deadlines. We recommend early registration since some programs fill quickly. Call us at 203-284-2772 with any questions or to register. Most events are free unless otherwise noted.
