Welcome to Fall!  This is an exciting time as we begin our fall and winter programs! Virtual Fitness is back by popular demand; classes have started, but there is still time to register!  Boccia is starting next week and our fall kayak class will be held in November. Golf and archery clinics will continue indoors.

 

The Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey Team has begun pratices and games and Wheelchair Rugby has started thier practices at the WIlson Grey YMCA in Hartford.  Everyone is excited to be back!

Wheelchair Tennis & Adaptive Pickleball Clinics a Success!
Both the Wheelchair Tennis and Adaptive Pickleball Clinics were a success!  New players and returners took to the newly refinished courts to play tennis and pickleball and enjoy some camaraderie.  We look forward to more tennis and pickleball in the spring!
Paratriathlon Season a Success!
Congratulations to all the competitors in the Dave Parcells Madison Triathlon in September!  We had 4 individual racers and 4 relay teams this year, making for one of our biggest groups thus far!  Thank you to our coach, Doug Levens, our volunteer guides and all the athletes for a successful season!  Also, a big congratulations to Korey Mosher-Varano and Brittney Wheeler, who recently competed on the national stage.  Brittney finished 2nd in the ambulatory division at the USA Triathlon Youth and Junior Championships in Ohio.  Korey competed in the USA Paratriathlon National Championships in California.  Great job, Brittney and Korey!  
Veterans Fishing Tournament
The return of our annual Veterans Fishing Tournament was a sucess!  Twenty four  veterans and boat captains enjoyed a day on the water at Candlewood Lake followed by an award luncheon on September 21.  Congratulations to winners of the tournament, veteran Mike Kelsey and boat captain, Mike Iovino, with a 5-fish total weight of 21.16 lbs. which is a TOURNAMENT RECORD... and 6.26 lb. lunker! WOW! Many thanks to our partners and sponsors: Move United Sport, VA Adaptive Sports Grant, Connecticut BASS Nation and Maj. Steven Roy Andrews Fishing Outreach Program for helping us to make this event possible!  
Sled Hockey Team
The Gaylord Wolfpack Sled Hockey Team's season has started!  The team practices 1-2 times per week at Westminster School in Simsbury or Northford Ice Pavilion.  We are part of the Northeast Sled Hockey League and compete in games across the northeast monthly.  For more information on the team, please visit our team webpage.  We are recruiting players!  If you are interested in joining the team, please let us know!
Upcoming Programs
Fall Virtual Fitness Series
Join us for  the Gaylord Sports Association Fall Virtual Fitness Series! This FREE 7-session virtual class series will work on your fitness, strength, flexibility and endurance! Classes include Full Body Fit,  Strength and Conditioning, Yoga, Mobility and Chair One Fitness. Classes are designed for all ability levels and are taught in the seated position with various modifications available to fit each individual’s capabilities. No experience is needed. Recommended equipment: chair, resistance bands, and hand weights.  Resistance bands will be provided for new participants.  Classes are held on Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM Oct. 21 through Dec. 9 on Zoom.

Archery Clinics
Learn the basics of archery and practice proper form at our indoor range with instruction from USA Archery certified coaches.

Golf Clinics
Golf clinics provide the opportunity to work with a trained PGA professional, Certified Recreation Therapists and volunteers to adapt the sport of golf, overcome barriers, and support independence. Clinics will include practice at our indoor driving range and putting green.  Beginners and returning participants are welcome and all equipment is provided.

Boccia Open Play
Boccia is a throwing sport of precision which has been adapted for athletes of all abilities using a few modifications. The object is to place balls closest to the target ball by throwing or rolling the ball using a ramp. Games are played one on one, in pairs, and teams of three. All are welcome to learn this game of skill and strategy!

Kayak Class
Join the Sports Association for a kayak class in preparation for the summer kayak season! This Adaptive Kayak Class provides the opportunity to learn or re-learn to kayak.  Certified kayak instructors teach the basics of paddle strokes, kayak equipment, safety and how to adapt or modify for individual needs.  Once a participant completes the class, they will be eligible to participate in open water paddles during the summer.

 

 *This class has Essential Eligibility Requirements for participation, including COVID-19 vaccination for participants and instructors. Please contact the Sports Association for details*.

  • Pre-registration is required for all programs.  Please contact us to register by emailing sports@gaylord.org or by calling 203-284-2772.
  • To maintain as safe an enviroment as possible, COVID-19 protocols will be used for all attendees, staff and volunteers. All participants will be screened for COVID-19.  Face coverings continue to be required.   
  • Cost is FREE unless otherwise noted.
  • Clinics will have a maximum number of participants per session.
  • Some programs have essential eligibility requirements for safety.
