Sports Association Newsletter

The Sports Association is dedicated to improving the lives of persons with physical disabilities through adaptive sports and recreation.

Dear Friends of the Sports Association,

We are excited to announce the beginning of the reopening of sports programming provided by the Gaylord Sports Association!  As we transition back to sports, we will be adding activities based on precautions and the feasibility of running programs in accordance with Gaylord Specialty Healthcare and State of Connecticut guidelines.  In these unusual times, our number one priority is the health and safety of all participants, volunteers, and staff.  Thank you for your patience as we make this transition.

Look below and see what the Sports Association has been doing these last few months.

Feel free to contact the Sports Association at 203-284-2772 or visit our website at www.gaylord.org/sports for more information. We hope to see you soon!

News and Updates
Paratriathlon Team
The 2020 Sports Association Paratriathlon Team moved to an almost virtual format this season based on COVID-19 regulations. We would like to thank USA Triathlon who awarded us a grant to support triathlon training during COVID-19. This allowed us to incorporate an individualized training approach for each athlete, led by coach Doug Levens.  The team usually trains from May - September for the annual Dave Parcells Madison Triathlon which was cancelled. This year, the team participated in Zoom calls from May-August which covered topics ranging from from specific event training, nutrition, and strength and conditioning.  The grant supported the addition of individualized online training plans, one on one coaching sessions and the purchase of new training equipment for the athletes. In addition, the team was able to participate in the Lake Terramuggus Open Water Swim Race in Marlborough, CT on August 23rd. Five Sports Association Triathlon Team athletes participated in the event, competing in distances ranging from 1/2 mile to 3-1/2 miles.  Our season is not quite over... see below for our next virtual event, which we are inviting anyone to join!

Hiking Without Boundaries
The Sports Association is excited to be a part of Connecticut's first Adaptive Hiking Program!  We are working with PT students from Qunnnipiac University on an initiative to start adaptive hiking in CT, starting with purchasing a Spartan Freedom Chair from GRIT.  This is a hand-propelled all terrain wheelchair that will allow a participant to go off road for hiking.  To learn more about the program and help support Connecticut's first Adaptive Hiking Program click here!  Let's help them reach their fundraising goal!
Gaylord Golf Classic
The ANNUAL GAYLORD GOLF CLASSIC was held June 15 at the Farms Country Club in Wallingford. The proceeds from this tournament help to support Gaylord Sports Association's adaptive sports programs.  The weather at the event was great and so was the golf! Even with social distancing protocols, the event went off without a hitch.  Our THANKS to all our sponsors and players! Even in these unusual times, the Golf Classic was a success!
