Germination will take 7-14 days.
If you weren’t able to join us in worship this past week, fear not. Pots, dirt, and seeds will be available throughout the Lenten season and everyone so that everyone can experience the growing process together.

Conference Update:
The United Methodist Church has wrestled with matters related to human sexuality since 1972. With the most recent postponement of General Conference until 2024, and the launch of the Global Methodist Church, some churches are discerning they should disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church. Some disaffiliating churches will stay independent and some will join the Global Methodist Church.
On February 18, 2023, the Virginia Annual Conference met in a called virtual session. The sole purpose of the meeting was the consideration of the disaffiliation requests of 34 churches. The disaffiliation of a church must be approved by a majority vote of the lay and clergy members of the Annual Conference. The disaffiliation of 33 of the 34 churches was approved by the Annual Conference. The disaffiliation of New Town UMC in Williamsburg was not approved.
Disaffiliation Statistics:
- As of December 31, 2021, the total number of professing members represented by the 34 disaffiliating churches was 6,604. This is 2.18% of the total membership of the Annual Conference of 303,268.
- As of December 31, 2021, the average attendance at all weekly worship services by the 34 disaffiliating churches in 2021 was 2,511. This is 2.59% of the total weekly worshiping membership of the Annual Conference of 97,098.
- The amount paid by the 34 disaffiliating churches for all conference apportionments over a five-year period was $3,593,866. This represents 2.3% of conference apportioned receipts over that same period of $156,490,720.

2023 Lenten Worship -
Schedule & Themes
Lent is the season when the Bethlehem Star is replaced by the Cross of Calvary. We are invited to experience the Love of Jesus that will go with us into the dust and ashes and dirt of this world believing in the promise of New Life. The light of God's Love that came into this world at Christmas will redeem and restore this world at the resurrection. Christians are encouraged to practice acts of devotion, prayer, and self-denial as representations of our willingness to go with Jesus into the darkness of a hurting world in order that it might be raised with him.
This Lent, at Springfield UMC, each member of the congregation will be given dirt and a seed in a pot at the beginning of Lent. Keep it at your home or office and care for it and pray over it as the miracle of growth is going on under the ground. Bring the pot back to church on Easter so we can all see the evidence of New Life that is promised in the Resurrection. Everyone is encouraged to stay connected through the Lenten season by posting/sharing thoughts and images on social media of what is happening, either in yourself or in your potted plant.
