On March 14, 1954, after five months of prayerful meetings and discernment, a group of 137 people met together at Garfield School to participate in the largest church charter worship service ever conducted in the state of Virginia. On that Sunday, under the pastoral leadership of The Rev. George W. Harrison, Springfield Methodist Church was duly constituted and organized for the glory of God, the proclamation of the gospel, and the service of humanity.

To recognize, affirm, and celebrate this congregation’s 70 years of evangelism in this community, the Church Council has discerned that from August 13, 2023, to March 17, 2024, we will celebrate a seven-month-long commemoration of ministry. As part of this celebration, both the Church Council and Pastors are asking every congregant of Springfield UMC to recommit themselves to supporting the missions and ministries of the church by actively engaging with and participating in one of the following ministry areas:
  • The Nurture Ministry Team will seek to offer ongoing opportunities for fellowship and learning through the utilization of our social hall and kitchen. They will also work to recognize each of the 137 charter members and/or reconnect with their families.
  • The Outreach Ministry Team will seek to offer targeted ministries that focus on the needs of the people who now live and work within 2 miles of the church. They will also strive to renew our connection to the Garfield School and rebuilding our relationships with the staff and students who learn and work there.
  • The Worship Ministry Team will seek to offer special musical events and offerings, both during and outside of worship, that seek to engage past participants and invite new congregants to get involved. Worship services will have a monthly them that focuses on each of the seven decades from 1954 to the present that highlights the changes in the church, the community, the culture, the music, and every other part of our shared lives. Previous pastors and guest preachers will be invited to preach from the pulpit on Sunday mornings.
  • The Witness Ministry Team will seek to create and offer a multifaceted and multimedia marketing campaign that broadcasts and shares the missions and ministries of the Church with the community (social media, banners, t-shirts, mugs, news reports both on TV and printed, etc.).
To share your interest and availability with your Church Ministry Leaders, please complete one of the 70th Anniversary Commitment cards that are located in the main hallway.

In this time of pastoral itinerancy and change, it's important to show our thanks for pastoral care and leadership. Please donate generously for a Pastoral Love Gift. You may send a check to the church with a memo entry "Love Gift," use the normal offering envelope and mark it "Love Gift" or use one of the specially marked envelopes that will be placed in the sanctuary in the near future.  Be thoughtful, prayerful and appreciative in expressing your gratefulness.

In the days and weeks after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, his disciples were faced with many new challenges. Who was in charge? - What do they do next? – Why did Jesus leave and when would he be back? – How was this group (that would eventually become the church) supposed to work and function?

Through looking at some of these questions that were faced by the early church, we will explore and make connections to the current/modern structures, functions, and organizational components of The United Methodist Church. For example, although we understand that Christ is the foundation upon which we build the church, what does it take to build up the church in today’s culture? What kind of community is it we are trying to establish and who can be a part of it? What difference does church membership make in our busy and hectic lives? And what does it mean to belong to the body of Christ?

There are many things that we, as the universal church, are still figuring out. There’s stuff that we’re learning and yes, even relearning – and there are still, so many aspects of our shared life that require grace upon grace upon grace… Hopefully, this worship series will create opportunities to discuss and engage with how far we’ve come (as an individual denomination and global religious institution) and how far we still have to go. Perhaps there are practices and traditions that we need to re-implement or strengthen – and maybe there are others that we need let go of… Through looking at scripture and making connections to our modern era, we will discern together how the church is supposed to work.
