Sunrise Drive FFO Digest
Sep 15, 2015 - Vol. 1 Issue #1
Hello!
You know those people that work hard behind the scenes to make things great for everybody watching? That kind of describes the Sunrise Drive Family/Faculty Organization! The FFO is a non-profit 501(c)(3) and similar to a PTA/PTO, except we do not pay national dues or commit money to political action committees. All of the Sunrise families and teachers are members of the FFO and work together to make Sunrise Drive Elementary a vibrant learning environment with lots of community and extracurruicluar events for the students.

Please read about the FFO and what's happening in the FFO Digest, our brand new newsletter, where we plan to publish a monthly wrap-up of the articles posted to the SunriseFFO.com web site. Welcome aboard!

Sincerely,
— Amanda Saffer & Valorie Colson (FFO Co-Presidents)
Sunrise Drive Family & Faculty Org
What does the FFO do?

The FFO organizes, operates, and communicates to all families and faculty the many Sunrise, CFSD, and community programs and events. We also generate funding to support the vibrant learning environment and our programs and events.

Here are examples of some academic and family events the FFO funds and/or manages:

Academic: Field trips, artists in residence, online computer programs for reading ( RAZ Kids & Tumblebooks ) and math ( Reflex Math ), subscriptions to Scholastic News and Time for Kids, supplemental art class supplies, and 5th grade Legacy Project materials.

Family Events:
Talent Show, Science Night, Fine Arts Gala, Chinese Festival, Sunrise Steppers, Family Clean-Up Days, Book Fairs, 5th Grade Promotion, and the Community Garden.

The FFO budgets over $30,000 for grant requests and teacher discretionary spending for classroom items. This means our teachers and school community have the biggest influence in how to best use the funds we raise. The role of the FFO is to facilitate the process, discuss the needs, and approve/decline the spending.

How can I help?

Participate! Attend FFO meetings on the fourth Friday each month at 8:15AM in the LRC, to learn about upcoming events and activities, and vote on FFO matters.

Donate! The Spirit of Sunrise fund helps us support both academic and family events/services. To make a donation ($50/child recommended, any amount appreciated), visit sunriseffo.com/donate or leave a check, payable to Sunrise Drive FFO, in the FFO drop box in the front office.

Volunteer! We don't just fund amazing events for Sunrise students and families, we organize and staff them. Without the help of our Sunrise parents, none of these events and activities would be possible. Many events are broken into shifts, so even thirty minutes can make a huge impact. We hope you volunteer for at least one activity/event this year. Find out more at sunriseffo.com/volunteer or press the Big Red Button below to sign up!

Events and Activities
Spiders & Cider

Friday, October 30th

5:00 – 8:00 pm

Our annual fall festival with costumes, games, and candy needs volunteers, or some of our kids’ favorite activities may not be possible.

These activities need your help: carnival games, maze, costume contest, cakewalk, raffle, popcorn, cotton candy, pizza and parking lot safety.

We ask every Sunrise family to donate a bag of candy for prizes in the front office.

Raffle donations are a great way to raise funds. Please contact Bethany Jaramillo ( email) if you have items to donate!

Garden & Campus Cleanup
Saturday, October 3rd
7:00 am – 11:00 am (anytime)

We need lots of helpers – both young and old, and some muscle to help spruce up the school campus.

We will be refreshing paint all around the school and tidying up some of the worn out areas. If you can, bring basic tools (brooms, rakes, clippers) to help make Sunrise Drive look its best.

Some projects are designed to be done by kids which gives them a sense of responsibility for the school.

Garden helpers are needed to prepare school plots for fall planting. We will be clearing out all current vegetation, carting in compost (4.5 cubic yards!), rototilling, weeding and replacing irrigation lines. Kids are fantastic at shoveling compost into wheelbarrows and weeding! This is truly a job for all ages - no experience necessary.

Additional garden tools would make quick work of this large task. Wheelbarrows, shovels, and hand clippers on loan for the day would be greatly appreciated. Don't forget to label your tools with your last name to ensure your tools go home with you.

Help make Sunrise look good!

Volunteering at Sunrise
Volunteers organize community and fundraising events and provide support in the classrooms to enrich learning and foster community spirit. Examples include Spiders and Ciders fall celebration, Book Fair, Mathathon, Robotics and the Garden.

Check out the upcoming opportunities to get involved:

Book Fair (Sep 21-25): The Scholastic Book Fair is a great way to encourage a love of reading in your child. It is also provides a direct benefit to the school as proceeds from it are used to buy books, scholastic news magazines and other items in the classrooms.

Garden & Campus Cleanup Day (Oct 3): The school budget only goes part way to make our school look beautiful. The rest is up to us. Ms. Davidson has a punch list of projects, and the FFO budgets for materials. A great weekend opportunity for the whole family!

Spiders and Ciders (Oct 30): Students look forwards to the Halloween themed carnival each year at Sunrise. From the Cake Walk to the Maze to Thriller and the Monster Mash. It's all set up, staffed, and packed up by volunteers. A thrilling chance to help!

Robotics (all year): with four rotations and all 2nd-5th grades participating, there are many opportunites to help kids read the instructions and figure out how to program and operate Lego robots. It's super-fun and no computer/robot/cyborg experience is required!

A big thank you to all the past volunteers, and if you've haven't yet volunteered at Sunrise before, please give it a try. You might just discover it brings a new element to your relationship with your child and her/his school. You also might enjoy it!

– Kirstin Girdner, Volunteer Coordinator

Sad Soccer Ball

Sunrise kids love to play soccer and basketball at recess. Unfortunately, many of the balls are bald from all the use. If you have a new or used ball in good condition, please consider donating it. Active bodies help keep young minds active in class!

Ball donations can be dropped off at the front office. Please contact Valorie Colson ( email) with questions.
