Sunrise Drive FFO Digest
Mar 22, 2015 - Vol. 1 Issue #7
Hello!

Spring is in the air at Sunrise Drive! The 3rd grade recently took a field trip to Sabino Canyon to enjoy the blue sky, mountains, and learn about the native peoples who enjoyed living here over a thousand years ago! Spring Break is of course next week (Mar 28 - Apr 1) so we hope you have fun plans to enjoy the extra time with your children.

We had a great turn-out for the Chinese Spring Festival, and owe a big thank you to festival organizers Jenny Dessent and Anita McGuire, and Book Fair coordinator Kirstin Girdner!

Check out the Jenny and some of our immersion students on the Morning Blend on KGUN9!

Mathathon kicked off Spring fundraising and was a huge success! Lots of math and dollars that add up to help the FFO fund more great adventures for our kids. Thanks so much to Debbie Claggett and the Mathathon team for their hard work!

Before you go on break... w
e need help with the Spring Picture Day this Thursday, Mar 24th, and in April we have the Garden Cleanup, Spring Art Gala and Spring Book Fair too!

Please
check out

Spring Book Fair & Arts Gala

April 25-29 - Spring Art Book Fair - open before school, during lunch, after school and at the Fine Arts Gala on April 29th from 5:30-7:30.

Visit the Student Art Show and Book Fair, have some dinner with friends while enjoying chorus and band concerts, do some crafts, and more! It will be a wonderful reminder of why Sunrise is such a great school, and should be a really fun night.

General schedule for the 29th:
5:30 p.m. Art Show, Book Fair, and Garden open; food available for purchase
5:30 p.m. Band performance
5:45 p.m. Approx start time for the Chorus performance
7:00 p.m. Garden Closes
7:30 p.m. Art Show, Book Fair, and booths close

Food and drink (pizza, bottled water, and Kona ice) will be available for cash-only purchases.

The Garden will be open to visit and to plant a seed for fall. There will be several craft tables and the Tucson Museum of Art docents will have an activity and education for the kids too!

Every child will have at least one art project on display; however, none of the art will be for sale. Your child will bring home their art project(s) by the end of the year, so just enjoy the amazing display of Sunrise talent!

To make it a fun night for everyone, we need volunteers willing to set up, clean-up, and help with the craft tables.

Please contact Sarah (Walters) Reitmeyer via email if you can help, or...

Mathathon hits the numbers!

The Mathathon is a Sunrise tradition that helps us raise funds while our students have fun learning and doing math!

This year was another success. Sunrise famil
ies commited to adding $24,595 in funds, and we have received $23,881 to date! We had a 44% participation rate, so the total divides out to about $100 average per child, up from about $65 last year.

All monies raised will go to fund Sunrise student's extracur
ricular activities such as: field trips, teachers’ grants, artists-in-residence, the science fair, the student publishing center, the 5th grade legacy project, Lego Robotics, Spiders and Cider and many more events and activities.

Thank you for supporting the Mathathon and helping all of our students learn that math is fun!!!
– Debbie Claggett, Mathathon Chair

Box Tops for Education

We just made our second Box Top submission to earn money for our wonderful teachers.

Thank you to all who take the time to send those in! All those box tops really do add up. As of right now our approximate submission and earnings for the school year is $1,200!

As a reminder, I do collect box tops several times a year so there is always an opportunity for you to get them in. I will be making a collection in May.

Chinese Spring Festival Success!

Thank you Sunrise for the most successful and dynamic Chinese Spring Festival yet!

We had over 600 people attend our event from the community.

Performances by our Sunrise students, over thirteen children's cultural activities, martial arts performers, traditional chinese instrumentalists from the Confucius Institute, delicious Chinese food, and much more were enjoyed by all.

Everyone had such a fun time that we decided to extend the event by an additional hour to allow for more activities and our exciting China Sprout Book F
air.

Thanks to the efforts of the book
fair committee, we reached over $3,000 in sales! With the 15% fundraiser and the generous donations of parents, over $1,000 worth of books and educational materials went into the classrooms.

On behalf of the entire Chinese Spring Festival Committee, we want to thank you, Sunrise Drive for your support!

– Jenny Dessent & Anita McGuire,
Festival Chairs

All of the FFO positions are of course also volunteers and the FFO programs would not happen without all their combined efforts. Next year there will be several open positions, described below by our current co-president, Amanda Saffer...

FFO Open Positions for the 2016/2017 School Year (HELP NEEDED!)
There are a few open positions for next year that desperately need to be filled in order to ensure a successful year for our school and students. The FFO works hard to ensure our students get the most well rounded education they have come to expect and enjoy, and couldn't do it without the help of many caring families. Please feel free to contact the the current chair for more information and please take a peek at the volunteer catalog for a further explanation of positions.

– Amanda Saffer, FFO Co-President
