“Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.”
- Dalai Lama

From the Principal’s desk…

Hello CSP parents,

I hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving break with family and friends. Our 2nd graders read The Secret of Saying Thanks recently. One of Mrs. Ahnfeldt’s favorite quotes from the book is, “The heart that gives thanks is a happy one, for we cannot feel thankful and unhappy at the same time. The more we say thanks, the more we find to be thankful for. And the more we find to be thankful for, the happier we become.” She guided her classes to jot down a list of 100 things they were thankful for. Soap bubbles, hamsters, my family, the sun, and gravity made the list.

Several student quotes are posted below from the Gr. 1, 4, and 5 ‘ Veteran Gratitude Letter’ project. Thank you, students for sending thoughts of appreciation & encouragement for our servicemen and women.

In partnership,

Susan Nosal

TEACHER’S FAVORITES
Parents frequently ask ‘ What would my teacher or tutor like for Christmas, birthday, thank you gift, etc.?’ To make it easier to access your teacher’s ‘Favorites’, you can now find this posted on each grade level web page, including our Special’s teachers (located under the Specials TAB).

READING COMPREHENSION TIPS
• Reduce amount of text that the student reads at one time.
• Break up passage into short segments.
• Modify materials to student’s reading decoding level.
• Give short, clear directions.
• Have student narrate – paraphrase verbally – what was read.
• Eliminate visual distractions on the page.
• Emphasize (highlight or underline) important points.
• Assign a project instead of a test.
• Teach how to find context clues.
• Teach student to answer “Wh-“questions in the story: who, what, where, when, why.
• Talk about story. Make real-life connections.
• Have student illustrate or role play the plot.
• Review vocabulary daily.
• Read with your student.

CHARACTER
DECEMBER Character Focus: Love & Hope. Teachers will note which character strengths were discussed each week so you may continue those conversations at home. CSP classes will also implement Peer Mentoring, pairing older and younger classes to engage in character discussions and activities together. Mentoring across grade levels is a part of the Board initiative for enriching TCA’s Character Education program.

VETERAN LETTER PROJECT – Grades 1, 4, 5
In conjunction with studying the character strength of “gratitude”, CSP 4th graders and 1st graders (with their 5th grade buddies) wrote letters or appreciation and encouragement to deployed service men & women. The students enjoyed this collaborative time with their mentor team. The 5th graders did a superb job guiding our 1st grade students to produce their best work. More than 100 letters were written. The letters were mailed to one of the recipients below:

Capt. Henicke serving in the Middle East

The Richer Family serving in Cuba
Captain Armstrong serving in Afghanistan
Lt. Col. Sean Evans serving in Afghanistan

Each letter was specially drafted with meaningful words. The 1st graders wrote a couple of sentences and drew a picture. The 4th graders told a little about themselves, expressed gratitude, and included a joke or wish. This was the most enjoyable writing project of the year so far. Here are a few of excerpts to make you smile:

Wednesday Grade 1

1. “Thank you for risking your life for me.”
2. “You are brave.”
3. “I want you to know you mean a lot to me and I am grateful for your hero’s heart.”

Monday Grade 4:

1. “My mom is the most hard worker in the house and my dad is close…”-Will
2. “I hope you can zoom home to your loved ones very soon. Always remember that we are thinking of you.” - Logan
3. “Already you’ve made me feel safer. You’ve served our country as hard as you can and I am proud of you.” - Zach
4. “Two goldfish were in a tank. One turns to the other and says, “Do you know how to drive this thing?”- Zach shared a joke in his letter

Tuesday Grade 4:

1. “I play the piano, and I like to read (well, actually, it depends on the book) …Surprisingly, I absolutely love to clean.”- Norah
2. “Thank you! You’re a hero.”- Tommy

TWO WEEKS LEFT TO REGISTER
CSP GR. 3-6 STUDENTS INVITED TO PERFORM
IN THE COLORADO SPRINGS CHILDREN’S CHORALE
“IN HARMONY FESTIVAL”
CSP has received an exciting invitation from The Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale for an “In Harmony Festival” on April 10-12, 2017 that only costs $20.00 per student.

DROP OFF CHECK (made out to CSCC) or $20.00 CASH to the CSP office or your child’s classroom teacher. Label the envelope “Children’s Chorale” with your child’s name & grade/day @ CSP.

This is an opportunity for your student to sing at the Pikes Peak Center in a huge choir (several hundred students participate every year).
Mrs. Higgins will receive music copies based upon the number of students who sign up and pay their $20.00 by Dec. 8, 2016 (the CSP Winter Concert Date).
She will hold a couple of rehearsals for CSP students (after mid-January)- before the April Festival rehearsals - so our students are ready to learn the choreography at the ‘Rehearsal and Workshop’ dates in April.
April 10 and 11 - Rehearsal and Workshop (3:45 – 6:30 pm)
April 12 - Rehearsal and Concert (3:45 – 6 pm, then a 7:00 pm Concert)

*Performance on the Pikes Peak Center Stage
*(1) Complimentary ticket per singer (for a family/friend member to attend)
*Dinner on Wednesday night
*Commemorative Poster and certificate
*(1) DVD recording of the Concert
The Children’s Chorale has an excellent program. It’s the first time CSP has been invited to this exciting event.
Based upon the number of CSP students who choose to participate, Mrs. Higgins may need a few parent chaperones.
If you are interested in this event for your student or have further questions, please contact:
Paula Higgins phiggins@asd20.org
We are so excited to share this opportunity. We’d love to have your family join the fun!
