From the Principal’s desk…

Hello CSP Parents,

Our Wellness Task Force and TCA Leadership invite you to join us for upcoming viewings of the documentary SCREENAGERS. There will be three showings of this film (with a brief discussion time afterwards):

October 24, 7 pm (Full-time Elementary parents at the East Gym)

October 25, 7 pm (CP and CSP parents at the East Gym)

November 2, 7 pm (Junior High and High School parents at the North Gym)

The documentary is approximately 70 minutes long, and will be followed by approximately 20 minutes of principal-facilitated discussion and Q&A. You are welcome to attend any screening, but per above, the associated discussions will be focused on specific grade levels/age groups.

The following description is from the Screenagers website:

“Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.”

I hope you can join us for this important event.

CSP 4th GRADERS DISCUSS BRAVERY

Mrs. Daum's 4th graders finished a Socratic discussion on being brave. Students shared their wisdom:

  • Being brave is doing something you didn’t think you could do no matter how nervous you are.
  • When we are brave, it helps others be brave.
  • When we are brave, our lives are more exciting.
  • Doing something we didn’t think we could do is like raising the bar for ourselves.
  • If we aren’t brave, we will never know what we are capable of.
  • When we are not brave, we miss out on opportunities.
  • Being brave is like pushing past shyness.
  • Each time we are brave, it gets a little easier to be brave the next time.

COMMUNITY NEWS

TUTORING AVAILABLE - Through Children’s Literacy Center

Do you have children who attend your school that are struggling with reading? Did you know they could receive free tutoring through Children’s Literacy Center (CLC) at the Monument Library? Children’s Literacy Center (CLC) is a local non-profit organization whose mission is to build a life of success through a foundation of literacy…ONE child at a time. We all know how important reading proficiency is. Not only are reading skills an important indicator of academic success and achievement, but the ability to read has proven time and again to guarantee economic security and social stability in our neighborhoods and communities, in addition to benefiting children’s creativity, empathy, understanding, and curiosity.

CLC has helped more than 10,000 children increase their reading skills since 1993 with dedication and commitment from parents, students, and volunteer tutors. With 95% of the children who completed at least 12 weeks in the CLC’s Peak Reader Program® improving their reading skills by one or more grade levels, the CLC is the perfect place for readers who are struggling to meet school reading standards. We provide this service FREE of charge!

Criteria for student enrollment

In order to be eligible for the Peak Reader Program®, a child must be reading below their grade level, must have completed the first semester of 1st grade, and must have a reading level between first and sixth grade. CLC volunteers cannot tutor children diagnosed with Dyslexia or those on an Individual Education Plan. For children who are eligible, tutors work with children one-to-one using CLC’s phonics-based program at no cost at all! If you have students who fit these criteria and you would like to refer them to CLC’s program, please complete and submit the online Student Referral Form and the Parent Commitment Form. A Spanish version of the form is also available online. CSP PARENTS ARE CONSIDERED THEIR CHILD’S PRIMARY TEACHER. You do not need a CSP teacher to refer a student because CSP does not teach or assess reading skills.

Once the Parent Commitment Form and the Student Referral Form have both been received, the student’s name is placed on a waitlist. As the Children’s Literacy Center’s waitlist can become quite long, sometimes children may be unable to enroll until the following semester.

Who are the tutors?

Children’s Literacy Center tutors are volunteers from the community who have completed a background screening and three hours of CLC training. Many of our tutors are retired professionals wanting to give back, some are high school students required to complete volunteer hours for school, and a few are college students pursuing careers in education. Regardless of their background, all of them possess a desire to help the children in their community. The one-on-one attention along with the easy to follow curriculum is what makes the program so successful.
