Call for Nominations: Hiroshi Tsuji Early Career Researcher Award
The Call for Nominations has been released for the 2024 Hiroshi Tsuji Early Career Researcher Award. Sponsored by The Combustion Institute and Elsevier, the award recognizes up to two early career researchers who have made significant contributions to advance their field of research within four to ten years of completing their doctoral degree or equivalent. Nominations must be received by 23:59 EST on 15 November 2024.

Meet the Newest Member of the CI Office Team
Gabriella Gray, Administrative Assistant
Gabriella, a recipient of a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and Human Services from Pennsylvania Western University in Fall 2023, prides herself on her dedication to fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. Gabriella joined The Combustion Institute’s Staff in January 2024 and has quickly become an integral part of our team. She is excited to explore her new role within the CI office.

2nd International Metal-enabled Cycle of Renewable Energy (MeCRE) Conference
This conference will take place 13-15 November 2024 in Darmstadt, Germany. The event is a forum for researchers to exchange information about metals as innovative energy carriers in a renewable energy system. More information is available here.

14th United States National Combustion Meeting (USNCM)
From 16-19 March 2025, the Eastern States Section will host this meeting in Boston, MA, United States. Featuring a comprehensive technical program, this meeting has a theme of emphasizing energy transition, sustainability, and fire safety. You can find more information here.

12th European Combustion Meeting (ECM)
Scheduled to take place 8-11 April 2025 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, this event is organized by the British Section of The Combustion Institute. The three-day conference will include five invited lectures and five poster presentations covering a wide variety of combustion-related topics. For more information visit here.

15th Asia-Pacific Conference on Combustion (ASPACC)
The Singapore Section of The Combustion Institute will host this conference from 18–22 May 2025 in Singapore. The theme is “building a zero-carbon and sustainable future”, reflecting the growth and evolving scope of combustion research in the Asia-Pacific region. Read more about this conference here.

16th International Conference on Combustion Technologies for a Clean Environment
Clean Air 2025 will take place on 25-29 May 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal. The deadline for abstract submissions to this event is 31 December 2024. Topics included are innovative combustion technologies, low-carbon fuels, energy efficiency improvements, and post-combustion emission control systems. 13th Mediterranean Combustion Symposium (MCS)

CI Members honored by the Royal Academy of Engineering
Congratulations to the following CI members who have been recognized by the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) for their exceptional work.
- Markus Kraft, University of Cambridge, was elected as a Fellow of the RAEng for his pioneering work in computational modeling of combustion phenomena and particle technology.
- Jennifer Wen, University of Surrey, was elected as a Fellow of the RAEng for her development of advanced modeling and simulation approaches to understanding the consequences of accidental releases, fires, and explosions.
- Tim Lieuwen, Georgia Institute of Technology, was elected as an International Fellow of the RAEng for his contributions to the aerospace and energy professions.
- Elaine Oran, Texas A&M University, was elected as an International Fellow of the RAEng for her significant contributions to computational physics, astrophysics, reaction flow, and high-speed chemical and nuclear flows.

O'Connor Awarded $1 Million Grant from NSF
Jacqueline O’Connor, The Pennsylvania State University, received a $1 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) to support research on how undergraduate engineering students become energy-literate through long-term projects focused on decarbonization. Read more here. |

Hasse Named as a Top Expert in CFD and AI
Christian Hasse, Technische Universität Darmstadt, was named as one of the top experts in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and artificial intelligence (AI) to follow on LinkedIn for his development of chemical energy carriers to support a sustainable world. |
|
|
Qiao Named a Fulbright Scholar
Li Qiao, Purdue University, has been recognized as a Faculty Fulbright Scholar. She will conduct studies in Japan and collaborate with fellow scientists at Tohoku University on a project titled “Exploring Ammonia as a Hydrogen Carrier for Aerospace Applications,” focusing on ammonia’s combustion properties and use in propulsion systems for small to midsized aircraft. Ju Awarded $3.6 Million Grant from NSF
Yiguang Ju, Princeton University, received a 3.6 million dollar grant from the NSF Growing Convergence Research program to support his research in green ammonia with renewable electricity directly to nitrogen and water. Read more here. |
