Update from the 40th Symposium Program Co-Chairs

As planning and preparation for the CI's 40th International Symposium - Emphasizing Energy Transition and the commemoration of The Combustion Institute's 70th anniversary continues, we are excited to share news from a productive program planning week, thanks in no small part to the diligent work of the reviewers and colloquium teams.

From a record number of submissions, around 580 papers have been selected for oral or poster presentation. Despite the higher number of submissions, acceptance remained competitive, with about 39% of the papers that went for review being accepted to the Symposium. In reflecting on program planning week and the final pool of selected papers, we find ourselves excited about the quality of the technical program for the symposium.

And for those who may have not had their work accepted this time around, or those who couldn't get their manuscripts submitted in time, Work-in-Progress Poster (WiPP) submissions are now being accepted through 8 May 2024. You can submit your one-page abstracts through the Symposium website. Detailed descriptions of the possible colloquia for you to submit to are also available on the Symposium site. WiPP sessions will be scheduled to run concurrently with contributed oral sessions and will be prominently displayed in a well-trafficked area during the proceedings.

We are also looking forward to the amazing lineup of invited speakers and industry participants who have agreed to share their perspective and expertise with us during the symposium. In addition to the Hottel, Plenary, and Topical Review presentations, there are several invited industry speakers. You can find information about all the invited speakers and their talks on the Symposium website.

The beautiful and historic Milan will offer attendees cultural and sightseeing opportunities unique to the city, exemplified by this year's excursion venue and the banquet venue. However, due to potential visa travel requirements to Milan for attendees from certain countries, we encourage you to make your travel arrangements at your earliest convenience.

We look forward to connecting once again with our colleagues and formally welcoming new members to the community at the 40th Symposium.

Upcoming Board of Directors Election

To ensure continued diversity on The Combustion Institute Board of Directors, the Board of Directors Nominations Committee worked hard to develop a balanced slate of candidates. The Nominations Committee, chaired by Thierry Poinsot, selected a slate of 14 candidates for the seven board spots to be filled in 2024. The candidates will be announced soon. The election will run from 3 June to 3 July 2024. The election will use a modified single transferable vote (STV) process to ensure at least one female candidate, at least one industry candidate, and at least one candidate from an underrepresented region is elected, consistent with the Board’s goal of increasing diversity.

Members who wish to vote in the election must have an active account on the CI Account Management System (AMS). If you feel that your account status is not correct, please contact info@combustioninstitute.org.
