Update from the CI Office |
|
|
Greetings! 2025 is in full swing and so is the CI office. We are happy to report that our first foray into full meeting management was a success. We thank the organizers (and attendees) of the 14th US National Combustion Meeting for trusting us to act as conference organizers for their meeting in March. The meeting was a huge success, hosting ~500 attendees and 340 presentations, in addition to inspiring speakers and excellent pre-meeting workshops. The CI office continues to hone our conference organizing skills and are ready to assist members and sections whenever needed.
We are also excited with the progress of Volume 41 of the
Proceedings of The Combustion Institute, to be published in 2025. The organizers of the Regional Combustion Meetings and the
PROCI Editors have devoted themselves to producing an exceptional inaugural issue of our “odd-year” (or
PROCI-oy) volume. More information is available in the CI Announcements section of this newsletter.
This is truly a time of expansion and growth for the CI. We have many goals for the coming year, including growing our support and services to our sections, establishing an active media and outreach committee, and preparing for the enhancements of the 2026 Symposium.
As always, your success is our success. Please let us know of your events, meetings, achievements, etc., we would love to spread you news and support our members and sections in anyway possible.

2023 Distinguished Paper Award (DPA) in the Spray, Droplet, and Supercritical Combustion Colloquium
Congratulations to Hao Zhao, Chao Yan, Guohui Song, Ziyu Wang, and Yiguang Ju for winning the DPA in the Spray, Droplet, and Supercritical Combustion colloquium. The investigation for their paper titled, “Studies of low and intermediate temperature oxidation of propane up to 100 atm in a supercritical-pressure jet-stirred reactor,” stemmed from the belief that kinetic experiments and theoretical computations at high pressures above 100 atm are highly needed for investigating the supercritical combustion chemistry in practical high-pressure engine systems. The 41st International Symposium on Combustion (ISOC) will be held in Kyoto, Japan from 26-31 July 2026). We are happy to report that the planning process for the 41st ISOC is well underway. While there will be a few changes, The Combustion Institute believes this will make the submission, registration, and publication processes easier for registrants. Among these changes are the planned use of Microsoft CMT for paper submissions and the contracting of a new software company, CVENT, to facilitate a more streamlined meeting experience, both online and onsite. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Update on the 41st International Symposium on Combustion
The Program Co-Chairs (PCCs) and Local Host Team (LHT) are actively working on plans for an outstanding Symposium. The 41st ISOC PCCs, Professors Osamu Fujita and Venkat Raman, have released the Call for Papers for the 41st International Symposium. The Call contains a complete description of the Symposium themes and colloquia, as well as details about the submission and evaluation processes.
The LHT, led by Prof. Kaoru Maruta (Tohoku University, Japan) has the pleasure of planning the Symposuim in the award winning Kyoto Conference Center. Designed by Japanese architect Sachio Otani in 1963, the building is a geometric megastructure of exposed, reinforced concrete that reflects Japanese culture and nature while incorporating the sophistication and practicality of modern architrecture. Otani's design bested 195 entries in a competition to develop the structure.
More information about the convention center and the history and beauty of Kyoto will be shared over the coming months on the CI's social media.
