The Combustion Institute
Quarterly newsletter for the advancement of combustion science

Vol. 9, No. 3 - August 2024
A Word from the New CI President
I would like to take this chance to extend my greetings to the members of The Combustion Institute (CI). Many of us enjoyed connecting and updating each other about a month ago at the 40th International Symposium, which focused on Energy Transition, in Milan, Italy. I also want to send my regards to those who couldn't make it to the symposium and look forward to seeing you at the next combustion symposium in Kyoto, Japan, on the week of July 26, 2026.

In my new role as President of the Combustion Institute, I want to give a special acknowledgement to our former president, Dr. Philippe Dagaut, who led the Institute during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude to Professors Andreas Dreizler and Fei Qi, who are leaving the Executive Committee, for their valuable leadership and support to both the Institute and our community. Your selfless and tireless service to the community is greatly appreciated by us. I would like to seize this chance to offer my congratulations and extend a warm welcome to seven new additions to the Board of Directors (BoD), while expressing gratitude to all departing BoD members for their dedication to the Institute.

Upon conversing with numerous individuals, I have understood the necessity for the Institute to remain adaptable in order to confront the distinct challenges of our present era as a community. By doing this, we aim to improve the service we provide to our members. One of the changes includes the Proceedings of the Combustion Institute (PROCI).

I am pleased to announce that PROCI will be available for publication during the years when the International Symposium on Combustion is not held, as a first step in returning some publishing decisions to the community. Initial papers will be requested by the 2025 regional meetings such as ASPACC, the U.S. National Combustion Meeting, and the Mediterranean Combustion Symposium, while the participation of the European Combustion Meeting is currently under discussion.  The handling of manuscripts and decisions on acceptance will be handled solely by the committees and issue editors of the regional meetings, while the CI Office and PROCI editors will provide support to ensure high-quality off-year PROCI issues.

In addition to PROCI, we have more exciting projects underway aimed at energizing the community, particularly our younger members, and empowering our members to tackle real-world issues through science and engineering innovation. We will seek your input before making significant changes and notify you promptly of any updates.

This newsletter, compiled by our hardworking CI Office staff, showcases numerous recent events, accomplishments, and recognitions within our community. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

Best,

Hai Wang
President, The Combustion Institute

International Symposium on Combustion

Providing updates about the recent International Symposium on Combustion

Symposium Summary

The 40th International Symposium - Emphasizing Energy Transition proved to be a great success! Over 1500 people participated in the five-day event, which included 444 oral presentations delivered during parallel sessions, 138 presentations delivered in dedicated poster sessions, and 557 Work-in-Progress Posters on display. Program Co-Chairs, Bassam Dally and José L. Torero, did a fantastic job incorporating new ideas and approaches to allow for an increased number of presentations, while still preserving the integrity of the symposium and allowing attendees to fully appreciate the work of their colleagues. The local host team, led by Tiziano Faravelli and Italy Section Chair Mario Commodo, excelled at selecting venues and organizing unforgettable events. In addition, the pre-meeting workshops and ancillary events, including the Women in Combustion Luncheon and Early Career Researcher Mixer, set new standards of excellence for future meetings. Other highlights included nine Industry Invited Perspective Presentations (articles generated from their presentations will appear in a special edition of the journal, Applied Energy and Combustion Science) and two panel sessions focusing on the past and future of combustion science research.

Villa Erba in Lake Como provided a picturesque setting for those who participated in the picnic excursion, while the Alfa Romeo Museum served as a unique venue for the awards banquet. Those honored with awards at the Symposium are listed below. As always, we congratulate the winners and thank everyone for their support and participation. We continue to seek your assistance by requesting that you complete the post-Symposium survey(s) that you should have received via email, and submit any Distinguished Paper Award recommendations to office@combustioninstitute.org.
