The latest from the Haemophilia Foundation of New Zealand - August 2021
Covid
This month we all had a Covid shock to our collective systems. On 17 August a case of the highly infectious Delta variant popped up in Auckland, and the government immediately put us all into a level 4 lockdown. Pleasingly, as of writing, this seems to have had the desired effect, and daily cases are now trending downwards.

On Tuesday 31 August at 11:59pm all of New Zealand south of Auckland moved down to alert level 3. A further drop will be assessed on Monday 06 September. This represents some very good success battling the Delta variant of Covid-19, and is a credit to all Kiwis who did their best during level 4.

Northland data is currently being analysed, and a decision to move to level 3 will be made on Thursday 02 September.

With new cases still appearing in the community, though now rising at a slower rate, the Prime Minister has announced that Auckland will continue at alert level four until at least Tuesday 13 September.

You can find out more about what the different alert levels mean here: https://covid19.govt.nz/government-actions/covid-19-alert-level/

It is appropriate at this time to acknowledge the recent floods in Auckland, which is very tough to take on top of the continuing level 4 lockdown. Kia kaha.

It's important that we all stay connected at this time. HFNZ encourages you all to keep talking to one another, send aroha from afar, and above all, be kind to one another.

All HFNZ communication channels remain open, so check out our website, follow us on Facebook, look out for our emails, and feel free to reach out to your Outreach Worker on 0508 FACTOR (0508 322 867) if you need support or information.
HFNZ Women's Weekend
We continue to forge ahead with preparations for the upcoming Women's Weekend in Dunedin on 12-14 November at the Scenic Hotel Southern Cross.

We are committed to supporting HFNZ women. Despite the spectre of Covid-19 hanging over the entire country, we want to make sure that we can still offer this very important event, if we are out of lockdown and at level 1. If the Covid situation forces us to reschedule Women's Weekend, we'll share that information as early as we can, and look for an alternative date in 2022.

This promises to be an interesting and fun-filled weekend, with a bit of pampering, a bit of learning, a bit of reconnecting, and a whole lot of laughs. If you're a woman aged 18+ with a diagnosed bleeding disorder, or who carries the haemophilia gene, then this is the HFNZ event for you!

There is a cost for this event, which includes all flights, meals, and accommodation. We don't want money to be a barrier to attendance, so if you're worried about the cost, drop Leanne a line at admin@haemophilia.org.nz to talk about options.

Spaces are limited to just 45 for this exciting event, and we already have 35 filled! So, if you want to attend, you need to register today!

The first HFNZ educational webinar
On Wednesday 25 August at 7:30pm HFNZ held its first ever educational webinar. Abhi Tikkisetty, from the Waikato DHB, spoke on the benefits of physiotherapy for people with bleeding disorders. He presented some fantastic information, and followed up by answering questions from the floor.

This was a very successful event, which was well received by attendees. The event was recorded, and will be available on the HFNZ website and on YouTube soon.

We intend to produce regular educational webinars on a variety of topics over the coming months, so keep your eye out for more details. If you have any ideas or suggestions for content you'd like to see, let us know at info@haemophilia.org.nz.

WFH 2022 World Congress
The World Federation of Hemophilia, in conjunction with the Canadian Hemophilia Society are pleased to announce that plans for the WFH 2022 World Congress are taking shape. This important event will take place from 8 to 11 May, 2022. Here's what the organisers have to say about the event:

The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) and the Canadian Hemophilia Society (CHS) are excited to welcome the global bleeding disorders community to the WFH 2022 World Congress — the first major hybrid event of the international bleeding disorders community. The in-person component of the hybrid Congress will take place in Montreal, Canada, with select sessions being broadcast through our virtual platform to an expected audience of more than 8,500 virtual attendees.

The Congress program will cover the latest developments in our field, current patient healthcare issues, and the challenges ahead for the management and treatment of hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, rare factor deficiencies and inherited platelet disorders. In addition to this rich scientific content, there will also be ample opportunities for participants to make new friends and reconnect with old ones.

Update your member details
In order to increase the reach of HFNZ communications, and improve member outcomes, we continue to update member details in the database. The most pressing details are email addresses and dates of birth.

Having a current email address for you and your whānau is important as we try to manage costs. Posting invitations and information to members is an expensive business, and where possible we would prefer to make contact electronically. If you have an email address, but you're not sure that we have it, please let us know.

The other essential detail is date of birth. We need this so that we can be sure you're on the list for age-restricted events, like Adult Weekend, Youth Camp, and Women's Weekend. If we have no DOB for you the database won't filter you in to age-based mailing lists. Again, if you're not sure that we have your DOB, please let us know.
Southern walks

Sadly, the last walk had to be cancelled due to Covid. However, we hope to get back onto the hills at the end of September. The next walk is slated for Sunday 26 September.

In the current Covid climate we've made the decision to only have our walks if we're at level 2 or below. Furthermore, we need to be at level 2 or below at the time we send the notification of the next walk, which is usually around two weeks prior. So, if we're above level 2 two weeks before the scheduled walk, you can safely assume that it will be cancelled for the month. Don't worry, we'll let you know.

In the meantime, here's a couple of shots Ross sent in of his Covid-safe level 4 walk...

Keep an eye on your inbox if you're in the Christchurch area. Contact Ross at patersonfamily@actrix.co.nz or Kyle at mrcunninghawk@gmail.com for more info.
