The latest from the Haemophilia Foundation of New Zealand - April 2022
Covid
At the most recent meeting, on 09 April, Board members advised it was important to reiterate HFNZ's position on COVID restrictions and mandates.

As a health NGO, it is essential that we do our utmost to ensure that HFNZ members are safe and protected. That means listening to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, and implementing them in respect of HFNZ events.

As it stands currently, what that means is abiding by the guidelines set out under the Orange traffic light setting. You can find out more about those here: https://covid19.govt.nz/traffic-lights/life-at-orange/

The one caveat to this is that venues have the right to set their own rules over and above the government minimum. When we require the use of any venue we will need to abide by their rules.

If you have any questions about HFNZ's COVID policies, please don't hesitate to ask us at info@haemophilia.org.nz.
World Haemophilia Day
on 17 April, 2022 it was World Haemophilia Day. The theme of the event this year was“ Access for All: Partnership. Policy. Progress. Engaging your government, integrating inherited bleeding disorders into national policy“.

By raising awareness and bringing hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders to the attention of policymakers, we can increase sustainable and equitable access to care and treatment.

HFNZ again managed to get several local landmarks lit up red for WHD.

Here are some images of Te Toitū Otago Settlers' Museum, the Christchurch Airport tower and terminal, and the Wellington Cable Car tunnels lit up red for WHD. We're keen to get any of your photos send them in to us at info@haemophilia.org.nz.
Farewell to Rosie
HFNZadmin
Sadly, we have to bid farewell to our awesome Southern Outreach Worker, Rosie Maguire. Rosie is taking advantage of the opportunity to live and work overseas, while she's young enough to get a special visa. She's managed to secure a position as an early childhood teacher in Germany, and left NZ on 03 May.

Although she's only been with us just over a year, she's made a fantastic contribution to the HFNZ whānau. She has been a real driver in the events and activities undertaken by the Southern region over the last year, and has contributed significantly to other National events. We will miss her.

Before she left Rosie gave us the following message to share with members:

Kia ora koutou Southern members,

I have decided to work abroad for six months to gain some overseas experience and see another part of the world. Therefore, I have had to make the difficult decision of leaving this wonderful Southern community and the Foundation. It has been a pleasure getting to know and work with you over the past 14 months. Thank you for your kindness in welcoming me. Thank you for your honesty in sharing a piece of your lives with me.

I hope to see you again in the future.

Ngā mihi nui,

Rosie

We are currently advertising for a new Southern Outreach Worker. You can find out more here: https://www.haemophilia.org.nz/about-us/join-the-team/

Women's Weekend
We're on the home stretch for the 2022 Women's Weekend. After a lengthy postponement and several programme changes we're now all set to go.

The programme is looking very strong, with plenty of opportunities for reconnection, as well as some fantastic educational sessions with some excellent speakers.

Here are some tempters:
  • Cruising the harbour
  • Dunedin market
  • Claire McLintock
It's all very exciting, and there are now five extra spaces available due to cancellations. If you're interested in attending reach out to us at info@haemophilia.org.nz.

First in best dressed!
Southern WHD event
Speaking of Southern events, Rosie and the team organised a visit to the International Antarctic Centre for Southern members to celebrate World Haemophilia Day. This was a fantastic event, with an amazing turnout.

Here's Rosie's report on the event:

We did penguin feeding, the Hagglund ride, meet the husky dogs, morning tea, 4D film, and the storm followed by an Easter Egg hunt for the kids. Gabrielle was our knowledgeable guide.

The first photo is of the group about to experience the Antarctic Storm exhibit, minus 19 degrees wind chill factor in a simulated storm environment.

We had 35 attendees including Kathy and Lee from the hospital. A couple are not in the photo because they had young children and didn't want to do the storm so I stayed with them.

Second photo is of young member Nikau Palmer (age 3) dressed up in an Antarctic Centre jacket.

Lovely time to get together for WHD.

Northern rockclimbing
Last Saturday, 30 April, the Northern crew were finally able to hold their long-awaited rockclimbing event. This event has been in the works for several months, but has been repeatedly postponed due to Covid.

While there was only a small group attending, those who were there had a great time. Well done to the Northern team for persevering with this. Any opportunity for members to reconnect after the tough times we've had is truly valuable.

Darian managed to get a couple of candid shots in too...
WFH 2022 World Congress
Here's your last chance to register for the WFH 2022 World Congress. This important event takes place from 8 to 11 May, 2022.

While we will not be sending anyone in person this year, HFNZ will pay the registration fee for any HFNZ member who would like to attend World Congress virtually. As HFNZ President Deon Yorks says, "it’s a great opportunity for people to learn what’s happening without leaving the house"

Early-bird registration rates are no longer available. Virtual registration is now $70usd.

Just click the button below, register and pay, then send us the reciept for reimbursement.
The full program is now available for the WFH 2022 World Congress! With many educational sessions to choose from, participants will have the opportunity to update their skills and learn from our global leaders in the bleeding disorders community.

Invercargill fundraiser
HFNZadmin
A big thank you goes out to Gwyn Upritchard. On Anzac weekend 2022 Gwyn walked 57km, doing circuits around the Appleby sports grounds in Invercargill, to raise awareness of the NZ Blood Service and to fundraise for HFNZ.

Gwyn walked from 7am on Saturday 23 April, and raised $412 for HFNZ.

This is a great initiative, and we really appreciate the support. Thanks Gwyn!
Keep your member details up to date
In order to get the most out of your membership, it's important to keep your details up to date. The key details are email address and date of birth.

Posting invitations and information to members is an expensive business, and where possible we would prefer to make contact electronically. If you have an email address, but you're not sure that we have it, please let us know.

If we have no DOB for you we can't filter you in to age-based mailing lists, like Adult Weekend, Youth Camp, and Women's Weekend. Again, if you're not sure that we have your DOB, please let us know.
