Adult Weekend Update

With the change in Covid alert levels over the last couple of weeks, we want to ensure that everyone knows where we're at with Adult Weekend. While questions have been asked about whether this event will go ahead as planned, we are currently still committed to the 6 - 8 November dates.

That being said, we are maintaining a watching brief, and will review the decision in the coming weeks.

We're interested in your opinion about HFNZ members attending Adult Weekend in Christchurch in November. If you want to contribute, email info@haemophilia.org.nz.

The aim of Adult Weekend is to learn ways of improving your mental and physical well-being, and increase your knowledge about your bleeding disorder, while sharing, relaxing, and enjoying yourself. The programme will also cover complications that come with living with a bleeding disorder.

Because you all have differing needs, the programme is being tailored to cover a range of issues, with concurrent sessions where appropriate. There will be workshops presented by experts from within the Foundation and beyond, as well as opportunities to talk and share your experiences.

Ana Clulee: Central delegate to National Council

My name is Ana Clulee. I am married and we have 2 adult sons Michael and David.

I was born in Samoa where I was educated by the Catholic Nuns from Primary School to College'.

I worked at the Bank of Western Samoa (now Samoa) before I immigrated in 1973. I also worked at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in Wellington for 13 years. The last 21 years of my working career was teaching at various Early Childhood centres.

My interests are: reading, gardening, keeping fit by joining the masters' exercise group, walking, playing tennis, travelling overseas and locally, theatre, socialising with families and friends, and “volunteering in the community”.

Volunteering comes to me naturally as it is part of my DNA through my late Mother's contributions in our community when I grew up in Samoa.

I have served on the Khandallah plunket, Khandallah playgroup, Club captain at the Thorndon tennis club, Heart Foundation – Wellington Branch, Johnsonville friendship club, Johnsonville floral art and Johnsonville garden club. I was also a rep for the Kindergarten teachers on the NZEI Wellington District council.

I value the experience to serve on any committees that I belong to because I have gained great satisfaction in helping others. It is rewarding and I learn new skills, fellowship, relationship , increase confidence in my personal growth, getting to know other people through networking and my local community better.

I was diagnosed with von Willebrands bleeding tendency in 1990. Sadly I felt alone and scared when I was diagnosed as I did not know anyone with the same condition at the time.

I am honoured and delighted to be the delegate of the Central Region on HFNZ council. I will endeavour and aspire to serve and represent all members of HFNZ, and to learn new skills in collaboration with the executive members.

 Outreach
As the National Council and CEO have decided not to seek a new Midland OR Worker until 2021, members in the Midland region will continue to be supported by either Northern OR Worker Amber Maihi or Central OR Worker Lynne Campbell.

If you live in the Waikato DHB catchment your OR contact is Amber Maihi at amber@haemophilia.org.nz or on 027 512 1114.

If you live in the Bay of Plenty or Lakes DHB catchments, then your OR contact is Lynne Campbell at lynne@haemophilia.org.nz or on 027 273 3443.

Please refer to the image below to determine the DHB you fall under.

Outreach are now beginning to undertake travel within their regions. However, budgetary constraints mean that this will be limited. That means they will still be conducting some member contacts via phone, text, email, or video. Please connect with your OR Worker to organise the best way for you to meet with them.

Southern: Ross Paterson - ross@haemophilia.org.nz, 021 656 804
Central: Lynne Campbell - lynne@haemophilia.org.nz, 027 273 3443
Northern: Amber maihi - amber@haemophilia.org.nz, 027 512 1114

 Member Details
In order to increase the reach of HFNZ communications, and improve member outcomes, Outreach have begun updating member details in the database. Over the coming weeks members will be contacted to add missing details. The most pressing details are email addresses and dates of birth.

Having a current email address for you and your whānau is important as we try to manage costs. Posting invitations and information to members is an expensive business, and where possible we would prefer to make contact electronically. If you have an email address, but you're not sure that we have it, please let your Outreach Worker know.

The other essential detail is date of birth. We need this so that we can be sure you're on the list for age-restricted events, like Adult Weekend and Youth Camp. If we have no DOB for you the database won't filter you in to age-based mailing lists. Again, if you're not sure that we have your DOB, please let your OR Worker know.

 Southern Walking Group

By the time you receive this edition of Panui, the Haemo walkers will have completed two walks since we resumed after the nationwide Covid Lockdown.

The first of these was from Victoria Park to the Sign of the Kiwi and return via the Harry Ell Walkway and the second followed the Rapaki Track to the Summit Road, following an old Maori trail, with majestic views over Lyttleton Harbour and the Canterbury Plains. Turnouts for both these walks have been the highest yet and it is great to see new faces as well as our regulars. Photos taken by Amanda show us out there doing the business.

We have three more walks scheduled after this for the year and as those who are interested will have seen, we have some new walks to undertake. We are fortunate that we have a multitude of walks available in the Port Hills that allow us to take in vistas over Lyttleton Harbour, the open sea, Canterbury Plains and Christchurch depending on the walk that we choose. We can usually take in at least two of these stunning outlooks on any given walk!

Our next walk, on Sunday 27th of September, known as the Godley Head Circuit, starts from the Taylors Mistake Carpark (Car park is at the end of the road in Taylor’s Mistake close to the Taylor’s Mistake beach) and takes us out to Godley Head on the Godley Head Circuit. This is a longer walk (3 hrs approx), than our previous two but is not as steep.

As the weather is starting to warm, we encourage you to join us if an invigorating walk appeals.

More detail for trips will come out monthly and further information will be included in the next Bloodline. Remember a useful resource for these walks is Mark Pickering’s The Port Hills. For about $10 you will find detailed information about these walks. (No I don’t have a financial interest in Mark’s business!)

Remember a moderate level of fitness and a positive attitude is all that is needed to partake. We are fortunate to still have the support of Kathy Fawcett, CNS bleeding Disorders and Lee Townsend, Physiotherapist, who join us regularly on our walks.

For more information about our walks contact Ross at ross@haemophilia.org.nz.
