January meeting:
Our meeting in January is zoom only.  Our speaker is virtual and we haven't quite worked out all the kinks yet for live streaming our Hopworks meetings.  This is the only one, Promise!

Live Stream Improvements

We have received feedback about the live stream from Hopworks and it's tough to get the info from the speaker if you are trying to keep up on zoom.  We're working on improvements to the Audio feed and ensuring that any presentations are also on zoom as they would be in the room.  Hang in there with us while we work to improve this part of our meeting.

Upcoming Meeting Schedule:

February 13th at Hopworks:
Matt Thornton, fishing Alaska.

March 12, at Hopworks
John Swank, US Fish and Wildlife Service

March 30th (Saturday)
Spey Casting Clinic with Travis Johnson
Barton Park

April 9th: Fly Tying with Josh Linn.  Emphasis on spring Trout flies.

May TBD

Hopworks has an excellent Menu.  Check out the food options you can enjoy during the meeting.

Live Stream
on Zoom

New territory for the chapter.  We're attempting to live stream our meetings from Hopworks on Zoom.

We know that not everyone can attend in person but would still like to see the meeting speakers.

Dr. Helen Neville, TU Senior Scientist.

Helen Neville is TU's senior scientist and is an incredible resource for TU Staff and Grassroots.  She is a nationally recoginzed fish biologist and has recently been recognized by the American Fisheries Society.  (See the AFS Article Here)

Helen will discuss the science behind removing the lower 4 snake river dams. Please join us on zoom to understand this important topic.

About Helen: Helen is also a leader in conservation science for native trout. Helen completed her Ph.D. at the University of Nevada, Reno in 2003 where she studied how river network connectivity influences Lahontan cutthroat trout populations using genetic tools.

After a post-doc with U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station in Boise, Idaho, Helen joined TU in 2006. Since then she has led science that has expanded our knowledge of how stream connectivity and restoration, nonnative trout stocking, wildfire, and climate change impact native trout in the western United States.  She has also applied novel genetic tools to understand how native trout have evolved to be adapted to their environment.  As a testament to her scientific acumen, Helen has published numerous papers on novel native trout research in leading scientific journals or books.

Thanks So Much for your contributions!

We can't say enough about our member's generosity and support of the Chapter.  We are well-funded again to put on a first rate fly fishing and conservation camp for our young anglers.

Winter Steelhead Fishing:  It's Time!

Some of us are suckers for swinging flies for steelhead.  We know it's not for everyone.  There is the draw of a cool winter's day, a little drizzly, a little sunny.  We all march to the cast, step, retrieve beat that keeps us hunting for our favorite species.

Here's a classic pattern from our friends at the Caddis Fly Shop in Eugene if you are looking to get started tying up some winter steelhead patterns.  Enjoy!
