Fly Recommendations for Winter Trout

One of the "hatches" that occur in winter is the whitefish peak spawning period.

Whitefish are broadcast spawners and the peak cycle is usually between late October to mid December, depending on water tempterature.  A great fly to have in your box is some type of small egg pattern, or a fly with a pink, orange or shrimp colored hot spot.  This will mimic a whitefish egg that fish cant resist.

The pink Squirrel is an old but effective pattern.  Many of the new perdigon patterns with pink or orange hot spots originated from this fly.

NW Fly Fishing Outfitters talk winter trout fishing!

The team from NW Flyfishing Outfitters will be at Hopworks to get you ready for winter trout.  When the water gets cold, the holding areas and fly selections are different than the warmer months.  Learn about all these things, plus when is the best time to go.  Just because it's rainy in the valley, the Eastside can be a dry winter haven.

Everyone shoots to be on the water for the signature hatches.  Salmonflies and Caddis on the Deschutes, Green Drakes on the Metolius, Mothers Day Caddis on the McKenzie.  Big hatches also draw crowds!

If you're looking for a more intimate fishing experience with no crowds, winter trout fishing can be loads of fun.  It isn't always driving snow and ice.  There are a lot of pleasant calm days on the East side that will fill your winter fishing needs.
