Steelhead Ocean Migration:
The Wilderness Calling Conservation Initiative

Tracking Steelhead ocean migration has been very elusive.  Steelhead migration patterns are the most wide ranging of all the Pacific coast salmonid species and also least known.

Matt Thornton of The Wilderness Calling, and one of our own chapter members will describe this bold project using satellite telemetry to track steelhead in the Ocean.

PSAT tags transmit data three times every minute, that tracks these magnificent fish with unprecedented precision. This data is critical for:

  • Identifying key ocean habitats that need protection
  • Understanding migration patterns and environmental influences
  • Developing effective conservation and management strategies
  • Ensuring the long-term survival of these iconic native fish

About Matt

Matt joined our chapter in the early 2000's just learning what fly fishing was all about.  He grew into an excellent angler, then an excellent guide in Oregon, Alaska and Salt Water locations.
