PURE HEARTS
 & PURE WORDS
Removing Impurities
                          (CONCLUSION)

KEY THREE - REPENTANCE

This brings us to the repentance part of praying.  The rest of 1 John 1:9 says “… and cleanses us from all unrighteousness!”

What does God do that brings about cleansing?  Go to Hebrews 12 and you will find it:  Chastening or scouring out that which is impure!  God will chasten us to bring us to the point that we no longer want “it” to be a part of our life!  It is at that point that we repent; we change our minds about tolerating the impurity, about participating in the impurity, about making room for the impurity being dealt with!

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.  2 Corinthians 7:10-11

Prayer for cleansing must include repentance.  In prayer, repentance is a declaration of changing your mind, thought, purpose and views about a thing.  Repentance is to have another mind about a matter.  Before repentance is a manifestation, declaring repentance to God in prayer establishes the reality to be manifested.   In other words, before a changed reality can take place, the words of your lips must establish your will to be in agreement with God for this change to take place!

Notice also that repentance is required for “clearing yourselves” to take place!  Before a vehement, zealous desire for righteousness that replaces the impurity can develop within your heart, repentance must take place!  Prayerful repentance is declaring a willful decision to God that your choice is to cease and desist moving in a sinful direction (or the doing of thing(s) sinful) and to go in God’s direction and do God’s thing(s) and asking His help to accomplish it!  Just as the Disciples said, “Lord we believe, help our unbelief!”

Repentance comes from a godly sorrow.  When you are finally sick of the impurity, you will repent.  Until then, you won’t.  It is just that simple.  Now then, what will make you “sick” of any given impurity?  When you see the reality of what it does to or against God - Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  Remember when our moms used to tell us, “God is watching what you do even when I can’t see what you are doing”?  There is so much more truth to that than we know!

See Isaiah 43:24.  When you realize what your sin forces upon God you will want to repent!

Repentance is the result of two things:  1) God’s conviction process that brings us to the point of 2) being sick and tired of some iniquity (force of sin) dominating our life!

Instead of “sick and tired”, perhaps I should have said, being appalled and horrified at how we have given some aspect of authority over our lives which belongs only to Jesus Christ our Lord to other some power!

This really hit home with me in 2002.  For years I had wanted not only to quit smoking but to be free of tobacco altogether.  I had quit several times before only to return to that addiction time and time again and each time I could explain the circumstances of my resuming smoking cigarettes but I could not explain why I was willing to do so!  Finally – in 2002 – upon hearing a sermon by a TV preacher one day, I realized that I had given to those cigarettes a realm of authority that in truth belonged only to Jesus Christ!  For years I had prayed and prayed and prayed about wanting to quit smoking.

But it was only when I heard God’s Word in a sermon about being obedient to God’s directives to rid my life of all enemies to His authority was I able to pray in response to His Word and humble myself to surrender my rights and change my thinking on the matter.

It happened so rapidly that an onlooker would likely miss the process that took place in the span of some 15 minutes that day.  First of all; the keys to the kingdom manifested in proper sequence.  I heard God’s Word THEN I prayed in response to what God’s Word said.

Then I went through a conviction process (or perhaps I should say that the conviction process was completed) whereby God brought me to the place that I was literally horrified at what I had been doing - - stealing from Him the authority over my life that belonged only to Him and giving that portion of authority over my life to some other power – tobacco!

At the point that I was appalled at what I was doing, my choice was simple and easy, I prayerfully returned that authority to Christ Jesus and stated that if I ever wanted a cigarette again I would ask Him first!  From the moment I repented and transferred that realm of authority back to Lord Jesus until this moment nearly 10 years later I have been free from cigarettes and all tobacco!  I had not one craving or “nicotine fit” nor have I so much as reached for my shirt pocket to grab a smoke!  Not only that, but in my mind as well as in my body it was as if I had never even been a smoker – ever!  In other words, I not only was enabled to quit, I was set free!

But this would never have happened if I had not repented!  Repentance if crucial in purifying our hearts!

When we are made clean, we are then free of what once made us captive to “that” sin!  To be truly clean means to be absent any contaminants and if the contaminants are gone there is nothing left to induce us to sin in that given area!

For example:  If a man’s heart is cleansed from sexual lust he will have control of his eyes!  He will speak entirely differently about sexual conduct and he will also speak entirely differently about women altogether!  Discretion will be in control of his thoughts and words so that the fruit of his lips and the fruit of his conduct are pure, showing forth a clean heart and a clean conscience!

Now while there may be more to deal with in any given situation of impurities in the heart, if a saint will apply these three “keys of the kingdom” he or she will find that their path to moral/spiritual purity and freedom are become unlocked and opened up to them!  What more may be needed in any given case will be revealed by the Holy Spirit as you are faithful to apply these three basic “kingdom keys”.

I am sure that we will have more to come on this in the future, but for now this concludes this series on “Pure Hearts, Removing Impurities”.

PROPHET'S CORNER

A Cup of Trembling
&
An Oracle Against Damascus

Prophecy News Watch

This is the word of the Lord concerning Israel. The Lord, Who stretches out the Heavens Who lays the foundations of the Earth, and Who forms the spirit of man within him declares, “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem.

On that day when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves” (Zech 12:1-3).

True, the ultimate fulfillment of this passage will come at the very end of the age, but a careful reading shows the progressive nature of the prophecy. First the surrounding nations will be sent reeling, with both Judah (West Bank) and Jerusalem besieged. Ultimately all the nations of the earth will be involved, and those who move against Jerusalem will wind up injuring themselves.

And please don’t miss the way the Author identifies Himself: the One Who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth and forms man’s spirit within him. Not much doubt as to Who’s speaking, so we better pay attention.

When Will These Things Happen?

It’s safe to say that all the nations of the earth are troubled over Jerusalem today. They realize the ease with which the whole world could be drawn into a conflict in the Middle East. And almost all are already aligned against Jerusalem. Remember, the prophecy is initially focused on the surrounding peoples and indicates that Judah and Jerusalem will be besieged.

The degree to which this part of the prophecy is already being fulfilled is frightening. Much of the land bordering Israel has become little more than an armed camp, filled with troops at the ready.

Hezbollah has been moving their rockets and missiles into position again with Lebanon’s full support, while steadily increasing their inventories of weaponry. Syria also has troops along Israel’s northern border as well as missiles set to fire upon Israeli cities. In the South Hamas and the PA are no less prepared. Recent reports confirm that large numbers of rockets and missiles from Libya have turned up in Gaza.

Together, these next door neighbors claim that every city in Israel is now within missile range. In it’s headline report on Dec. 5, 2011 Debkafile assessed the likelihood of war in the Middle East, including an Israeli attack on Iran, to be very high between mid-December and mid-January.

The US and Russia have both stationed powerful fleets in the Eastern Mediterranean against this possibility. There’s still time for diplomacy but for now no one believes a diplomatic solution will be forthcoming.

Psalm 83

As a result, this is beginning to look like a run-up to Psalm 83, a battle that’s never happened, but involves all of Israel’s next door neighbors in an effort to “destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel be remembered no more” (Psalm 83:4).

The Psalmist pleads with God to pursue Israel’s neighbors with His tempest and terrify them with His storm so they will perish in disgrace (Psalm 83:15-17). I believe his prayer will be answered because this outcome is necessary to set the stage for Ezekiel 38-39.

Isaiah 17, An Oracle Against Damascus

We should also consider what could be a related prophecy from Isaiah 17. It was partially fulfilled in 732 BC when the Assyrians conquered Damascus (Aram). But never did Damascus cease to be inhabited as the prophecy requires (Isaiah 17:1). In fact to this day Damascus is described as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, over 5000 years and counting. The fortified city in vs. 3 was Samaria, capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. It was destroyed by the Assyrians in 722 BC.

The Northern Kingdom consisted of the 10 tribes of Israel who rebelled in the religious upheaval that followed King Solomon’s death and was allied with Damascus against Assyria. Like Damascus it was defeated and its people carried off into captivity.

Since Damascus was never destroyed and never ceased being inhabited, the world may have seen a partial fulfillment in history that points to a total fulfillment yet future to us.

Validating Prophecy

This is not unusual in Bible prophecy where the complete fulfillment of a passage may unfold over thousands of years. You receive an example of this in the mail every Christmas. It comes in the form of a Christmas card that says,
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. And the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” (Isa 9:6).
The passage goes on to explain that He will sit on David’s throne and reign in peace forever.

Only the first phrase of this passage has come to pass. The Child was born, the Son was given. The rest of the passage awaits His 2nd coming, but the fact that He was born confirms that the rest will take place as well. Partial fulfillment is the Lord’s way of validating End Times prophecies thousands of years in advance.

The Oracle against Damascus is a lot like the one against Babylon in Isaiah 13-14, where Babylon is also described as being so totally destroyed that it would never be inhabited again. For many years scholars believed this prophecy was fulfilled when the Medes and Persians conquered Babylon about 535 BC.

It took the Gulf War to show us that Saddam Hussein had spent billions re-building Babylon, and to realize that Babylon was never destroyed in the manner the Bible describes. It has in fact been occupied almost continuously since its construction 2700 years ago. The City of Babylon will play a major role in world events at the end of the age before its final and total destruction, foretold in Rev. 18.

Back To Damascus

Admittedly the Oracle against Damascus in Isaiah 17 is somewhat more obscure. Scholars who place fulfillment of this passage in our time rely on four things:

1.The phrase in vs. 1 “Damascus will no longer be a city”

2.The multiple use of the phrase “in that day” through out the passage (vs. 4, 7, 9) which often hints of the end times

3.Men will “Look to their Maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel,” see below,

4.The mention of many nations in vs.12-14 would seem to include more than just Assyria.

Regarding point 3 there was a temporary revival in the southern kingdom under King Hezekiah that spared Jerusalem from the Assyrians, but nowhere is a revival in the northern kingdom or among the Arameans (Damascus was the capital of Aram) or Assyrians mentioned in history.

And yet in Isaiah 19:23-25 Assyria is mentioned with Egypt and Israel as being called “My people, My handiwork, and My inheritance” by God in the millennium. This reconciliation with God is still in the future.

Soon And Very Soon

The USA and Europe have been warning Israel that an attack on Iran would not only result in a wider war in the Middle East, but would also deliver a severe blow to an already reeling world economy. Because of this US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta recently said that Israel has to come to terms with a Nuclear Iran, an Islamized Middle East, and reliance on the US for protection.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said sometimes making a risky decision carries a heavy price, but the price for not making it would be heavier. Reliable observers interpret this to mean when the time comes to attack Iran, whatever repercussions it could cause will not be considered in light of the threat to Israel’s continued existence. We’ll soon know whether that time has come.

You can almost hear the Footsteps of the Messiah.

PLEADING FOR REPENTANCE

From Jerry Williams, Epic Ministries

When was the last time you pleaded with someone to repent of their sin?

I’m not talking about pointing out someone’s sin.  Too often I see those who quickly condemn people for sin, but seldom see anyone pleading with a lost friend or relative to repent knowing their sin will lead them to certain death.

Do you truly understand that your neighbors, co-workers, children, family members and others you meet each day will die an eternal death if they are not persuaded to repent?  Do you realize that God has chosen us to be His ambassadors to the lost and dying?  God desires to plead for them and show them His love through us who have by His grace already been gloriously saved.

Love always pleads for the dying and stands in the gap.
Judgment always points the finger and watches from a distance for the outcome.

Why did Jesus come to earth?
He came to make a WAY where there was no WAY.  He came not only to BLEED for us, but also to PLEAD for us that we might be SAVED.

For God so LOVED He gave His only Son.  Yes, Christmas IS a time of great rejoicing and celebrating.  But, it IS also a time unlike any other throughout the year wherein we have an open door to share the love of God and plead with men to repent.

In this season may the Lord powerfully and gloriously reveal His heart to our neighbors, friends and family as we unashamedly plead with them to turn their hearts to the One Who is the real reason for the season.  If we do that, then it truly will be a Merry Christmas.
