TRUE HOPE TIMES

PREOCCUPIED
WITH
DISTRACTIONS

Recently I studied the life of Solomon with the same fascination that always strikes me as I ponder his life story.
Here is a man whose very birth shows God's mercy and grace in working all things together for good!  David married Bathsheba through flagrant sin and disregard for God's laws (you should know the story) and yet after repentance God used this very marriage to produce the heir to the throne of David; Solomon who was chosen by God to build the Holy Temple at Jerusalem!

Solomon whom God blessed beyond measure with wisdom, understanding, wealth and kingly power - - a man who lacked nothing and was the most respected man in the world of his time still fell into dismal sin and whose life had an ignominious end!  Where did he get derailed from the track of righteousness?  What brought him to a point of such vanity as he wrote in Ecclesiastes?

Believe it or not, it began with the building of the Lord's Temple!  He became so preoccupied with the work of building that he was distracted from the purpose of the temple - - worshiping God!  With that great architectural success, Solomon began a building program that distracted him further from the God Who was concerned with building a special people!

The building of the temple took seven years but then Solomon lavished upon himself a palace that took THIRTEEN years to complete!  Solomon became preoccupied with the biggest distraction of all - - HIMSELF!

"I enlarged MY works:  I built houses FOR MYSELF, I planted vineyards FOR MYSELF; I made gardens and parks FOR MYSELF and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees; I made ponds of water FOR MYSELF to irrigate a forest of growing trees!"  Ecc. 2:4-6

What brought the wisest, richest, most powerful man in the world of his time to such a low, detestable spiritual state that his life became empty and meaningless (vanity, vanity, all is vanity!)?

He became preoccupied with distractions from spending personal, meaningful time in fellowship with God!  And Solomon didn't even have T.V., Cable Networks, Satellite Networks, video games, DVD movies or ...........!
Not only do we have the same distraction as did Solomon - - namely our own sensual selves; we have a myriad of devices and gimmicks to magnify our distractions with our preoccupation!

Just because we are born again does not mean that we might not again push Jesus outside the realm of our affections!  It happened to the Laodiceans and so Jesus revealed that He was on the outside and having to knock to get their attention!  In fact they had become so preoccupied with their distractions that an Apostle had to tell them that Jesus was knocking at the door - - they didn't even hear Him for themselves!

God included the account of Solomon's life for our benefit!  Do you find yourself preoccupied with distractions?  Take it as an alarm clock going off to wake you up and take notice of your condition before it is too late!  Refocus your attentions and your affections to the only place that can truly give you peace and assurances for this life; placed squarely upon Jesus Christ our Lord!

Renew your faith walk with God our Father!  Rediscover His companionship in fellowship and begin living with true meaning and purpose once again!

Many Blessings!

Do It Yourself Religion
http://www.christianpost.com

We often hear that most people in the United States believe in God, and if you trust the opinion polls, they do.

However, when you dig down a little bit, you’ll find this good news isn’t so good after all. According to a new book by George Barna entitled Futurecast, America is filled with people who are do-it-yourselfers when it comes to religion - either making up God as they go along or dropping traditional beliefs and practices, like going to church. Barna tells USA Today, “People say, ‘I believe in God. I believe the Bible is a good book. And then I believe whatever I want.’”

Indeed, Barna says only seven percent of those he surveyed say they believe in seven essential Christian doctrines, as listed in the National Association of Evangelicals’ Statement of Faith.

Barna’s Futurecast tracks changes from 1991 to 2011. It finds that those who say they haven’t been to church in the past six months, except for special occasions like weddings or funerals, jumped from 24 percent two decades ago to 37 percent today. That’s an increase of over 50 percent in the nation’s “unchurched.”

No wonder that Lifeway Research, in a new survey of 900 Protestant pastors, found that 62 percent say that the importance of being identified with a denomination will decline among believers over the next decade.

This buffet-style religion isn’t confined to the church. USA Today quotes Nadine Epstein of the Jewish magazine Moment as saying, that most Jewish people when asked if there can be Judaism without God say yes! Epstein adds, “You pick and choose the part of the religion that makes sense to you.”

Okay, folks, we are experiencing a religious smorgasbord. Indeed, Barna says with just a hint of hyperbole that America may become a nation of “310 million people with 310 million religions.”

Friends, if we believe in the Truth - not to mention in the future of the Church - this can’t go on. We Christians must get back to biblical basics, to “the faith delivered once for all to the saints.”

Don’t get me wrong: I believe in religious freedom and diversity. But I’m talking to Christians today. While we need to exhibit grace to our brothers and sisters in the many debatable matters of doctrine, we’ve got to stand rock-solid and shoulder to shoulder on the essentials.

No Lone Ranger Christians! We learn and practice these in the company of other believers, that is, in the Church. We worship together, we minister together. That’s why I wrote The Faith, a powerful manifesto of the great, central truths of Christianity that have sustained believers through the centuries. The Faith is a good place to go to refresh yourself - or learn for the first time - the doctrines on which every true Christian ought to agree.

But our primary goal in religion is not simply to get the doctrines right - as important as that is. It is to know the Lord Jesus Christ - but know Him as He is, not as we imagine Him to be. As my friend Stan Guthrie writes in his excellent book, All That Jesus Asks, “Jesus, unlike the religious action figures sold at Wal-Mart, is not infinitely bendable, able to assume whatever postmodern pose we give him.”

FROM LEADERS IN MINISTRY
Mountain of Truth
by: Michael Cochran

“I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and received the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” Philippians 3: 12-14 (NLT).

One key to having God move in our lives, and in our church, is simply to endure, to persevere, to get past the obstacles that Satan places in our path. Giving God room to work involves continuing on with the race that our God has marked out for us. It truly is much easier to quit, then it is to fight the good fight. Satan works at having us consider quitting as much as he possibly can. But, scripture calls us to run the race and to finish what God has designed for us to accomplish.

The bible instructs Christians to be patient and persevere in the face of trials. Waiting on the Lord when sickness or other situations happen is often difficult. But, if we do not throw away our confident trust in the Lord and continue to do God's will. We will receive all that He has promised. The scripture reads in Hebrews 10: 37-38 (NLT), “For in just a little while, the Coming One will come and not delay. And my righteous ones will live by faith. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.”

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.” Romans 5: 3-4 (NLT).

Of course, God comes in His perfect time, which we usually think is way too late! He has purposes in His “delays.” One of which is to enable us to develop the character qualities in the above scripture. So if you are going through the fire now, be sure that you allow it to accomplish these purposes in you! It will give you great peace now, and enable you to handle the next crisis with much more confidence.

Galatians 6: 9-10 (NLT) says, “So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone – especially to those in the family of faith.”

In the midst of a passage on the implications of sowing to the Spirit verses sowing to our sinful nature, the apostle Paul gives us some much needed encouragement: We need to learn to sow good seed in the midst of bad harvests. It is one thing to do good when things are going well; it is entirely different to do good in the midst of tough situations. We can become so tired and lose perspective. Do you feel like giving up? Stay with it. The harvest is waiting.

James 1: 2-3 (NLT) says, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.”

When we rely on God during our hardships, we see how much God loves us and how He is there for us every step of the way. The more we lean, the stronger we become. The stronger we become, the less life's circumstances will get us down. Life is hard. No one said it isn't. So let's align ourselves with the one who can increase our faith, so that we can persevere even when things look bleak.
