FY13 OIP-ISR Performance in Review

Brendan Rauw
Dear Colleagues,

The close of the fiscal year presents an appropriate time to evaluate the performance of the campus in terms of technology transfer and industry sponsored research.

I am delighted to announce a record 406 inventions were reported to OIP-ISR during fiscal year 2013, representing a 14% increase over 2012. We greatly appreciate the effort on the part of UCLA’s faculty, staff and students in disclosing these innovations to our office. This number reflects the world-class research being conducted across the entire campus and we expect this upward trend to continue.

Gross licensing revenues for fiscal year 2013 totaled $23M, up from $18M in 2012. We anticipate this number to increase following the launch last September of Xtandi®, a prostate cancer drug developed by researchers at UCLA. Industry Sponsored Research awards remained level at $39M, but constituted an overall increase in the percentage of research support coming from industry.

The campus has garnered national recognition for its success in new company formation, with 18 startup companies recorded for fiscal year 2013. OIP-ISR continues to foster the development of an entrepreneurial environment on-campus, as exemplified by the creation of a dedicated business development team and the introduction of an entrepreneurs-in residence program. More details on these and other activities can be found on our website.

We will be striving to build upon the success in the coming fiscal year and look forward to working with you to develop UCLA technologies into new products and services that broadly benefit the public.

Sincerely,

Brendan Rauw
Associate Vice Chancellor and Executive Director of Entrepreneurship
