Water Planet Raises Series B Round of Financing
Water Planet, co-founded by UCLA's Eric Hoek, has received a new Series B round of funding to continue the development and commercialization of its industrial wastewater treatment technologies. The funding round includes investments from Air Liquide's ALIAD Corporate Venture fund, Bluestem Capital and UCLA Venture Fund.

Connecting UCLA Startups with Alumni - CrowdSmart
As part of OIP-ISR's
Startup-in-a-Box program, CrowdSmart is coming to UCLA this fall to help UCLA startups connect and collaborate with the broader UCLA alumni community, and to enable alumni to find and propel promising Bruin startups to greater success. Chancellor emeritus, Charles E. Young is a founding member of CrowdSmart and serves on its board of directors.

Faculty Inventors Receive High Honors, Recognition
UCLA faculty members of the scientific advisory board of Santa Monica-based Kite Pharma, Inc. were recognized recently for their contributions to medicine: Owen Witte, M.D., a scientific founder of Kite, was reappointed to serve on Barack Obama's three-member Cancer Panel; and James S. Economou, M.D., Ph.D., was elected to the Nation Academy of Medicine, one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.

UC Announces $300K Startup Competition
In what is hoped will be the first of several such competitions designed to help the most promising University of California-associated startups obtain seed funding,
primeUC is collaborating with
J&J Innovation, LLC to give one $150,000 award and three $50,000 awards to companies with early-stage innovations related to therapeutics, consumer health, medical devices and diagnostics.
