of hands-on learning in

Smoke/Tobacco-Free Policy
UWG is committed to providing a healthy, comfortable, and productive learning and living environment for the students, faculty, and staff of this campus.

In March 2014, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia voted to create a policy that prohibits the use of all forms of tobacco products on property owned, leased, rented or in the possession of the University System of Georgia (USG). The policy applies to all employees, students, contractors, subcontractors, and visitors and is applicable 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also, all events hosted by a USG-entity or on behalf of the USG shall be tobacco and smoke-free, according to the policy. (See BOR Policy Manual 6.1 “Tobacco and Smoke-free Campuses”.)

UWG has no designated smoking areas on campus. A smoke/tobacco-free campus means that everyone, including guests, is free to travel and visit anywhere on campus without having to avoid potentially health-hazardous situations.

Building a smoke/tobacco-free campus requires the participation of all members of the UWG community. While enforcement is important, please remember to treat all individuals on campus with care and respect. We seek to educate and inform members of the UWG community of the importance of this policy.  Supervisors should enforce this policy for employees in their units at all times. Violations of the policy will be handled under the Student Code of Conduct or campus human resource policies.

For more information, please refer to the UWG Tobacco Free FAQ.

Thank you for helping make UWG a healthy place to work, learn and succeed.

Work related to water service for Aycock Hall started Monday, Aug. 26 and will continue through the week. Selected parking areas and sidewalks in front of the building will be blocked and not accessible for campus users. To avoid disturbance to building occupants, some work might take place after business hours, late evenings and nights.
Please use caution while traveling in this area and obey all signs and barricades.

Presidential Search Updates
The University of West Georgia Presidential Screen and Search Committee (PSSC) met on Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, with USG Chancellor Steve Wrigley to officially begin the search for the next UWG President. The search process will comply with the Georgia Open Records Act, the Georgia Open Meetings Act and the USG Board of Regents Policy 2.2, which governs the selection of an institution’s president.

For updates on the search, please refer to the Presidential Search website.

Service Animals on Campus

As a reminder to all employees, please see the service animal information on Counseling Services's website, as outlined under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Share this with colleagues as appropriate. Accessibility Services staff are happy to come and do a brief training on service and emotional support animals if this would be helpful to your department.

Please note, the two questions that you may ask a handler about a service animal are:
1) Is the animal a service animal required because of a disability?
2) What work or tasks has the animal been trained to perform?
Any other questions are considered out of bounds under ADA law.

Emotional support animals are NOT permitted in classrooms or other campus buildings, as they are only allowed in residence halls under the Fair Housing Act. Unlike service animals, emotional support animals are not required to have any specific training and as such may be a disturbance on campus.
