From Policy to Practice: Advancing Workplace GBVH Prevention in South Africa

Preventing domestic violence requires engaging with the social and gender norms that can make violence acceptable, normalise control and discourage people from speaking out. This includes creating space for boys and men to develop healthier understandings of masculinity, emotional expression, accountability and care, while ensuring that survivors remain at the centre of prevention and response efforts.

 

In this piece, Cody Thompson argues that men need to be part of the conversation not only as allies, but as partners in preventing violence. Drawing on personal experience and research, he explores how exposure to violence, rigid expectations of masculinity and harmful ideas about power can contribute to cycles of violence. The article calls for earlier prevention with boys, stronger support for people who witness domestic violence, interventions that promote accountability and behaviour change, and greater community capacity to recognise and challenge violence before it escalates.

 

The Western Cape Department of Social Development is inviting eligible non-profit organisations to apply for funding to deliver social welfare and community development services across the province. The 2026 Call for Proposals covers the 2027/28–2029/30 funding cycle and includes programmes focused on care and services to families, child care and protection, after-school care, social crime prevention, victim empowerment, substance abuse, youth development and sustainable livelihoods, among others.

 

The call provides an important opportunity for organisations working with children, families and communities to contribute to the delivery of social services and prevention-focused interventions. Organisations are encouraged to review the relevant programme specifications, eligibility criteria and application requirements before submitting their proposals.

National Strategy to Accelerate Action for Children: A Whole-of-Society Approach to Child Wellbeing

 

South Africa's children continue to face significant challenges, including violence, poverty, poor nutrition and unequal access to opportunities that support their development. Addressing these challenges requires more than individual programmes or interventions; it requires coordinated action across government, civil society, communities, families and the private sector, with children and adolescents themselves meaningfully involved in decisions that affect their lives.

 

The newly released National Strategy to Accelerate Action for Children (NSAAC) sets out a national framework for accelerating progress on children's rights and wellbeing. The Strategy identifies ten priorities for action, including strengthening families, improving early childhood development, preventing abuse and violence, and creating safer and more supportive environments for children and adolescents. It also calls for stronger collaboration between government and non-government actors, providing a framework for more coordinated action and investment to improve outcomes for children across South Africa.
