A New Initiative

Over the last few years, discerners have contacted me through Facebook, telling me how much they appreciate Vocation Ministry’s posts about the good vocation news and asking for my prayers. So, knowing that discerners (men and women) are following Vocation Ministry on Social Media, I thought a logical next step was to have a place where they could discuss issues and ask questions related to their discernment. Thus, the women’s discernment group: The Veil and men’s discernment group: The Collar were created.

    Men's Discernment Group: The Collar
    Facebook Group - 78 members

The Collar is a discernment group for men who are actively looking at joining either a religious order or diocesan seminary. So far, 76 men have joined the group, seeking answers to questions, prayers, support, and encouragement. I have two priests helping me facilitate this group: Fr. Patrick Broussard, Vocation Director for the Diocese of Lafayette, and Fr. Benedict Croell, O.P., Vocation Director for the Province of Saint Joseph: Dominican Friars of the Order or Preachers. Please send this email to the any male discerners from your diocese who could use some extra support. Again, this group is only for male discerners.

    Women's Discernment Group: The Veil
    Facebook Group - 120 members

The Veil is a discernment group for women seeking a vocation to religious life with an order or consecrated virginity within a diocese. In under three weeks, 128 women have joined the group. They are supporting one another through prayer and encouragement. Dawn Hausmann, Director of Consecrated Religious Vocations for the Diocese of Lansing, Michigan, has joined me to facilitate this group. If you know of any women who are discerning, please send them this email, inviting them to join the group. Again, this group is only for female discerners.

    What Can You Do?

Please pray for these men and women in adoration, every morning and night, and send this prayer request to the prayer warriors at your church. So many men and women are seeking the vocation to which God is calling them in families who attend your parish. We may not know their names or that they are even seeking the Road Less Traveled, but they are! A recent study shows that 30% of children, who come from active Catholic families, have thought about their life as a priest, brother, religious sister, or consecrated virgin.

Here is a prayer for just this occasion!

Almighty and loving God we thank you for the gift of this ministry. We humbly come before you to lead us and guide us as we pray and encourage young men and women to discern a call to serve others in a more radical way. We pray in a particular way for the young men and women from our parish (parishioner’s names). We ask you to continue to give us the desire and zeal we need to invite young men and women to discern a vocation to the Priesthood or Religious Life. We ask you Lord to fill us with your wisdom, so that we may share with others who you may be calling but are having trouble discerning their call to serve in your vineyard. We ask you Lord to keep the fire burning with each of us that we may be instruments in promoting vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. We humbly ask all this with the intercession of St. Alphonsus Liguori, the Blessed Mother, and your Son Jesus Christ. Amen!
