The Four Perils

The “Four Perils” that can be covered with a permanent life insurance policy include:

Dying too soon

There comes a time when someone we know passes away at a young age. If you read or watch the daily news, there are tragic stories of young individuals who pass away well before their life expectancy. As financial professionals, we understand that the statistics of passing away at an earlier age is low, yet the financial consequences of not planning can be high. The younger the family, the more protection they generally need — small children who require care, years of income that is forgone, and typically these families have high debt made up of student loans and  mortgages. Life insurance financially protects the family your client loves.

Living too long

Given the advances in the medical field, individuals are living longer, which means that clients need to plan for a long
retirement. In the past, it was common to plan for a 15-year retirement; now your client may have a greater number of years in retirement than the actual number of years they worked. As the population lives longer, the need to save is important. A permanent life insurance policy can provide cash value that can be used to supplement retirement income.

Becoming disabled

Statistics tell us that in our working years, there is a higher probability of becoming disabled than dying. In many life insurance contracts, clients can add a disability waiver to cover certain fees and expenses in the event of a total disability. Arguably, life insurance is an import asset that is needed, but should the client become disabled, they
may not be able to afford funding it. Permanent life insurance with a waiver of premium for disability can help to keep the policy in force and continue to provide the peace of mind that your client needs.

Needing long-term care

Clients are also faced with concerns over long-term care costs. Some clients could need home modifications while others fall prey to dementia and Alzheimer’s. These costs are not covered by regular health insurance or Medicare. Nursing home stays or home health care costs can have a detrimental effect on a client’s portfolio. Let’s look at an example. Take a client who needs their assets to provide for income during their retirement years. If all of a
sudden they were to dip into their funds, they would also affect the income they need. A permanent policy with a long-term care rider can provide payments to help cover long-term care costs.

A solution to cover four perils

For young individuals, life insurance can provide for their family in the event of a
premature death.

During retirement years, life insurance can provide supplemental income.

If the client were to become disabled, a waiver of premium can help them continue their
much-needed insurance coverage.

Should a client need long-term care, a Long-Term Care rider can provide
the necessary funds for home health care and much more.

Are You On Vacation

March 31st was the deadline to purchase an individual health insurance plan.  Now that open enrollment has closed what now?  Vacation for the rest of the year or take advantage of the opportunity ACA has provided?

With the individual health market essentially dead until the next open enrollment, now is the time to focus your attention on the group market.  Many groups early renewed in 2013 with their renewal due in Q4 2014. The difficulty is with so much business sitting in Q4, it puts a strain and backlog on the entire industry.

It makes sense to be proactive now and not to wait for a group’s renewal in Q4. Will clients want to renew early a second time in a row?  They might not, but it doesn’t mean you cannot start conversations now and plant the seed on what you foresee being a sound benefit strategy for the group to implement. Furthermore, it allows you to discuss any “product holes” the group may have. The more solutions you can offer today, the better off you are when it comes to retaining existing business and writing new cases . In addition, implementing these solutions today will be a lot easier than when the rest of your competitors start working their renewals in Q4.
