Chiba’s Psychedelic Days Vol.29
テーマ「HEISEI」
元号が「平成」から「令和」に決まったらしい。
このコラムを書き始めたのが4月1日。
そう、
私は上野御徒町の定食屋さんで、隣のお客が話していた会話から新元号を知った。
その後、石巻工房の東京ショールームに向かうために地下鉄で小石川に向かったのだが、
道行く人々には、私が期待していたようなザワツキ感は微塵も無かった。
みんな、あまり気にしないものなのかな？と、少々肩透かしを食らっていたのだが、
何故かインド人と思われる集団がしきりに「REIWA !」「REIWA !」と連呼していたのが逆に面白かった。
今から31年前の1月6日、
昭和天皇が崩御する前日に高校生だった私はあろうことか、
友人とバイクを盗んで捕まった事がある。
正確に言うと、友人がバイクを盗み、
私とはその後で合流するという手筈だったが、
その合流地点で共犯という事で逮捕された。
盗んだバイクで旅に出たかった訳じゃない。
若気の至りとは言え、
バカなことをしたと思う。
だが、その後、
送検されるわけでも、学校に連絡が入るわけでも無く、
警察署で答申書を1枚書いただけで、
そこから何の連絡も無かった。
何故か？
後に「昭和天皇の崩御で恩赦が与えられたんだよ」と、担当の警察官に聞かされ、
そんなことってあるのかよ？？と、
会ったこともない昭和天皇に妙な親近感を抱き、
自粛ムードの中、時よりテレビに映し出される彼の姿を眺めていた。
結果、
私達が犯した犯罪は不問になったのだが、
友人は「ちょうど良い機会だから」と高校を辞め、
被害者となるバイクの持ち主と友達になり、子弟のような関係になったそうだ。
縁というのはどんな形であっても面白い。
私はと言えば、
その半年後にタバコを吸っているところを補導されるのだが、補導員があの時の警察官。
自転車を盗まれて交番に行ったら、
「またお前かよ、因果応報って知ってるか？」と、
縁というのはどんな形であってもomosi…
そうして私の平成は狐につままれたような形で動き出したのだ。
と、まぁ、そんな事を上野御徒町の食堂で、ぼんやりと思い出していた。
平成が間も無く終わりを告げる。
準備は整った。
新しい元号の元に始まる新しい石巻工房は、カリモクやマニラ、ベルリンといった新しい縁と共に更に向こう側へ行く。
この春から始まる新規事業の、
ちょっとした宣言のつもりで今回のコラムを書いているのだが、
私の愚かな昔話で炎上しない事を切に願う。
さて、
新元号が発表された4月1日と言えばエイプリルフール。
「令和」がやっぱり嘘でした！
なんて事は...あったらちょっと面白いんだけどなぁ。
※犯した罪を正当化するつもりで書いている訳では無い。
私や友人の両親、被害者であるバイクの持ち主、
関係各所には多大なる迷惑をかけてしまった事をこの場を借りてお詫びしたい。

Theme: “HEISEI”
It seems like the new era name has been decided, from “Heisei” to “Reiwa”.
I started to write this column on April 1st. I found out about the new era name from the customer next to me while I was eating at a restaurant in Ueno-Okachimachi. After that, I went to get on the subway to head to the Ishinomaki Laboratory showroom in Koishikawa. Contrary to my expectations not one person on the street was excitedly discussing the news. Maybe this isn’t something people care about. As I was considering this, for one reason or another a possibly-Indian group were noisily exclaiming “REIWA! REIWA!”, which I thought was quite interesting.
Thinking back to the January 6th of 31 years past (the day before the Emperor of Japan from the Showa era passed away) I remembered when I stole a motorcycle with my friend and got caught.
To be honest, my friend was the one who stole the motorcycle. The arrangement was that I was supposed to link up with him after. However, that still counted as being complicit, which led to both of our arrests.
It wasn’t even that we stole it so that we could go on a trip*. It was simply youthful indiscretion - a stupid act.
*Editor's note: a reference to a phrase in a popular Japanese song from the 1980’s
Despite having supposed to be sent to be prosecuted and our school contacted, none of that happened. We filled out a report at the police station, but there was no follow-up.
Why?
I heard from a police officer that in relation to the death of the Showa Emperor, we received a pardon for our acts. As I pondered this, I felt a strange affinity toward an emperor that I had never met. Looking on at footage of him on television was sobering.
As a result, the crime that we committed was ignored. My friend took it as an opportunity and quit high school, became friends with the person whose motorcycle we had stolen, and had a sort of mentor-mentee relationship with him.
Fate is a funny thing.
As for me, about half a year later as I was reprimanded for smoking, the person who caught me turned out to be that same policeman from before.
Later, when my bike was stolen and I went back to that same police station, the same officer said, “It’s you again? Don’t you know about karma?”
Fate really is a funny thing.
And just like that, my Heisei Era was off to a bewildering start.
This memory came up as I sat at that restaurant in Ueno-Okachimachi.
The Heisei Era is ending soon.
Preparations are in order.
With the new era, this new Ishinomaki Laboratory will be creating new connections with Japanese wooden furniture brand Karimoku, as well as partners in Manila and Berlin.
I had just intended on making an announcement regarding our new activities from this spring, but ended up reminiscing about my foolish past. I hope there won’t be too many comments about that.
The day that the new era name was announced was also April Fool’s Day. Wouldn’t it be interesting if it turned out that “Reiwa” was actually just a prank?
Note: I did not write about this in an attempt to justify my crime. I’m borrowing this column space to apologize to my parents, my friend’s parents, and the owner of the motorcycle for causing so much trouble.
