Founded in 1961, Holocaust Museum LA is the first survivor-founded and oldest Holocaust museum in the U.S. It began as a group of survivors seeking to preserve photographs, documents, and personal items from before the war, creating a permanent home for these artifacts and a place to memorialize lost loved ones.
As the only Los Angeles institution focused solely on the Holocaust's impact, the Museum offers free admission to students and provides tours, exhibits, educational programs, and survivor-led discussions to help visitors understand the Holocaust's lessons and relevance today. In 2010, the Museum moved to its permanent location in Pan Pacific Park. Designed by architect Hagy Belzberg, the building has received multiple awards, including LEED Gold Certification and several architectural honors.
The educational philosophy of Holocaust Museum LA (HMLA) is to teach the history of the Holocaust through primary sources, including artifacts and personal stories. HMLA brings this philosophy to life by engaging students with interactive exhibits and survivor testimonies, which foster meaningful discussions. These discussions emphasize the dangers of "othering," promote empathy, and equip visitors and students with the skills to identify and combat hate rhetoric, encouraging them to become upstanders.
