PBA Schools · Miami, Florida
Where unique learners thrive
From Potential to Success
|
|
|
At PBA Schools—home to Palmetto Bay Academy and Toucanet Academy—we believe education is not one-size-fits-all. For more than two and a half decades, our schools have provided Miami-area students with a supportive, academically challenging alternative to the traditional middle- and high-school experience. As one of Miami’s oldest and most respected non-traditional school communities, we are known for helping bright, capable students rediscover their confidence, strengthen their motivation, and move from potential to success.

Designed for how your child learns
Our programs are designed with twice-exceptional (2e), gifted, and neurodiverse learners in mind. We understand that students may be intellectually advanced while also navigating ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety, executive-function challenges, or other learning differences. Every teacher receives extensive training in supporting diverse neurotypes and individual learning needs—instruction that is both rigorous and responsive. Our approach is neuro-affirming: we recognize students’ strengths, honor their individuality, and create personalized pathways for growth.

Positive niche construction
A central part of our work is positive niche construction—the intentional design of environments in which students’ strengths can emerge and their challenges can be supported without limiting their potential. Small classes, individualized attention, deeply positive relationships, and a caring culture help students feel understood and valued. In that setting, they build self-esteem, develop self-advocacy, and learn to engage meaningfully—while we backwards-plan from life after high school.

Taught by those who understand
Our commitment is strengthened by the experience of our school owners, each of whom brings more than 20 years in education in the U.S. and internationally. Many gifted and neurodiverse students respond especially well when taught and mentored by bright, gifted adults who understand learning differences firsthand—fostering trust, belonging, and authentic connection. Students graduate with more than academic preparation: greater confidence, stronger relationships, increased self-reliance, and the motivation to pursue their next chapter successfully.
