Inspiring Creative Communities
Art and design elevate everything
Our School unites the visual arts and the built environment as equal partners. We initiate conversations that shape creative practice, challenge limits, and nurture confidence, transforming our students, our communities, and ourselves. This is a look inside the School of Design.

Art and design at SDSU go back to 1887. The School of Design, formed in 2015, now brings six programs together under one roof in Brookings.
01 Architecture A studio-based path into shaping the built environment. A four-year pre-professional BFA plus a NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture, taught in a 10,000-square-foot open studio where every student has a desk of their own. |
02 Interior Design The only four-year interior design degree in South Dakota, accredited by CIDA. Human factors, materials, lighting, codes, and professional practice, with a required summer practicum and a travel study. |
03 Landscape Architecture A nationally accredited (LAAB) Bachelor of Landscape Architecture that blends design with STEM. Students design parks, campuses, trails, and public spaces, and have placed in international competitions, including third in Istanbul. |
04 Graphic Design A NASAD-accredited BFA in typography, image-making, motion, and interactive media, with required travel studies to London, Paris, Barcelona, New York, and San Francisco. Alumni work at Target Creative, Lemonly, IBM, Disney, and Google. |
05 Studio Art A professional BFA with specializations in ceramics, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, shown in the on-campus Ritz Gallery and informed by the South Dakota Art Museum and a visiting-artist program. |
06 Art Education Prepares students to teach art in K-12 classrooms, pairing studio work and art history with the teacher-education sequence. |

 | In the galleries Student work on the walls, working artists in the studios Thesis and senior exhibitions fill the on-campus Ritz Gallery through the year. The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program brings working artists like fiber artist Elizabeth Morisette into the studios, and a Digital Sketchbook Exhibition shares work from recent travel studies in Paris, Barcelona, and New York. |
 | Design in the community Design that reaches real South Dakota places Through Healthy Landscapes, Healthy Communities, a partnership with SDSU Extension now in its second year, students help towns plan public spaces. A semester-long visioning project at Thunder Hill Speedway with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation puts landscape and design students to work on real community questions. |
