The big picture
Reorganized around choice, technology, and trust
American education is being reorganized around choice, technology, and trust. Public schools still teach five in six children — yet nearly every arrow of growth points to the alternatives: charters, private choice, homeschooling and microschools. Meanwhile AI has quietly rewritten daily classroom practice, and a strained teacher workforce holds the system together.

Enrollment
Where America’s children learn
District public schools have lost about 1.9M students since the pandemic began. Charters (~4M) are the only public segment still growing, while homeschooling has climbed to ~3.4M.
Achievement
No national rebound yet
The 2024 Nation’s Report Card showed learning loss hasn’t reversed. About 40% of 4th graders are below Basic in reading — the largest share since 2002 — and 12th-grade scores hit record lows.
School Choice
Zero to 18 in five years
States went from no universal private-choice programs to 18. More than 1.2M students now use vouchers or ESAs, up ~25% in a single year, with ~$13B+ committed nationally.
Teachers
The system’s real constraint
Roughly 1 in 8 positions — about 411k nationwide — is unfilled or held by an under-certified teacher, affecting 6M+ students. Pay and prep pipelines remain the core fix.
Technology & AI
Ordinary faster than any tool before it
60% of teachers used AI in 2024–25, saving weekly users ~5.9 hours — about six weeks a year. Yet there are 0 binding federal AI standards, and most urban teachers report no training.

Student Wellness
Attendance is the new front line
48% of students say anxiety, depression or stress makes school hard, up from 39% in 2020. Chronic absenteeism remains well above pre-pandemic levels in many districts.
