April 2026

April is here, bringing the perfect chance to celebrate the joy of reading and lifelong learning! When you’re soaking up the fresh spring air or staying cozy on a rainy day, discover your next favorite book by taking advantage of our convenient curbside book pickup service. Our building remains closed for construction, but there's no shortage of exciting things happening at our library!

The library is now a Proud Partner of RevolutionNJ, New Jersey’s official commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. The State's tribute to our history began in 2024 and will run through 2033. We look forward to celebrating the anniversary through a variety of interesting and informative programs.

This month we also celebrate National Library Week (April 19th to April 25th) with the theme “Finding Your Joy”! Check our social media everyday throughout that week as we share moments of generations of Plainfield patrons discovering their joy at our library. And stay tuned for an exciting announcement that we’ll be revealing on April 25th. You won’t want to miss it!

Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for updates and event details.

🌟 National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities. The Carnegie Corporation of New York holds a special place in American history – including our own – and they are now helping us shape our future. We’re excited to announce that as a proud Carnegie library, we are receiving a $10,000 gift from Carnegie Corporation of New York as part of #CarnegieLibraries250, an initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Learn more at carnegie.io/47kNpzh.

In 1909, after 25 years of growth, the Plainfield Public Library was in desperate need of a larger space. The Plainfield Public Library Board contacted industrialist Andrew Carnegie to ask for assistance. Mr. Carnegie was known for his philanthropy and belief that libraries were ‘cradles of democracy.’ He agreed to donate $50,000 for a new building, and his generous donation helped inspire the imaginations and enrich the minds of over one hundred years of Plainfield readers and learners.

Mr. Carnegie changed the library landscape in America, funding 1,681 free public libraries during his life – 1,280 of which still operate today. Carnegie Corporation of New York invites communities across the country to join them in celebrating America’s library legacy. Help them honor Carnegie’s legacy and share the stories of how Carnegie libraries - like the Plainfield Public Library - have shaped and served American communities through their mapping project. If you have memorable stories, images, videos, or documents about Carnegie Libraries, please upload them so they can curate and share these crowdsourced materials online.

🌟 Plainfield Children's Librarian, Ms. Mary Lou has welcomed thousands of young readers as they walked through the doors of our children's library and helped them get started on their lifelong learning journey with programming that kept many of us in this community coming back for more.

Now, after four decades of service, Ms. Mary Lou is ready to enjoy her well deserved retirement. Join us on Thursday, April 16th at 3PM at the Drake House (602 West Front Street) for one last craft with Ms. Mary Lou!

Come enjoy all that the library has to offer! We have classes and programming for everyone of any age! (Click on Flyers For More Information)

When her estranged mother dies, Stella is left with an unusual one-way plane ticket and a note reading "Go to Paris". But Stella is hardly cut out for adventure; a childhood trauma has kept her confined to the strict routines of her comfort zone. When her boss encourages her to take time off, Stella resigns herself to honoring her mother’s last wishes. A feast for the senses, this novel is a testament to living deliciously, taking chances, and finding your true home.
