From the Desk of the Director...

Library Director Mary Ellen Rogan

This year we have included adults in the fun of our summer reading program. Craft classes and a bingo board geared to reading and all things library were welcomed by some of our patrons.

The image (left) is of our Glass Photo Transfer class held in July. We had a small but enthusiastic group of crafters who created personalized glass items sporting favorite photos.

It got us thinking that we should continue these adult craft events. We have thought that a monthly get together with coffee and craft might be a fun type of recurring event to promote. If you have any ideas for what you would like to see for adults, please let us know.

As I noted earlier in the year our strategic planning process will start in September.  Those interested in participating or sharing ideas for the direction of Plainfield Public Library as we move forward would be welcome. Please email admin@plfdpl.info for more information if you would like to participate.

This is your library, please help us make it a library of the future for Plainfield!

How's your Summer Going?
Teen Programs are here all summer long

If you joined us for our teen summer programs in July you might have-

- Printed your own design on a tote bag doing relief printmaking
- Achieved victory in one of our Switch gaming parties
- Made slime (and filled it with sharks!)
- Crafted a light-up ocean scene in a jar
- Joined in with our Muppet Treasure Island singalong showing of the Muppet's version of the Stevenson classic book (which, by the way, we are also reading live on our Youtube Channel)

If you missed all that, do not despair and gnash your teeth - we have more fun on its way to you for August!

How about Salt Painting? Or creating interactive stories with Twinery? Or perhaps you think you can beat our fiendish puzzles in our Ocean themed Escape Room (registration required)? Maybe it's time for a rematch in our Switch e-sports gaming party?

Whatever you choose, we're looking forward to seeing you - and because we can do in person programs again, we hope you'll join us for our fall programs too. Look out for pumpkins!

Ocean of Storytelling- tell your ocean tale
A Twine interactive storytelling workshop
August 4th
3-4pm
Computer Lab A
twine

" You are a gigantic Godzilla-style undersea monster, whose eons-long rest in the depths of the ocean has been disturbed..."
"You're a mad scientist who somehow manages to create a cross between a squid and a horse. Now what???"
"There's someone - or something - that's picking the crew of this submarine off, one by one..."

These are just a few of the bizzare and ... intriguing... writing prompts and strategies we'll use to start up some stories using the free interactive storytelling app Twine. If you feel you have a story to tell of your life beneath, upon or above the briny deeps, then come along and we will have some fun trying to tell it!

Registration for this program is essential as places are strictly limited.

Digital Literacy Students Praise Plainfield Library Classes

School may be out for the summer, but at the Plainfield Public Library, education never stops! In August, while the summer Digital Literacy Classes are in full swing, staff are also registering students for the fall sessions. The IC3 (Internet and Computer Core Competencies) computer skills sessions have been joined by Northstar Digital Literacy and Microsoft Office Specialist (Word and Excel) classes.

Interested? Read what some of our students have had to say about the program.
Genevive came to IC3 “to refresh and strengthen my knowledge of computer literacy and computer applications.” She talked about the class diversity and “students from different career paths.” She says: “The instructors were great; kind, patient, willing to explain themselves when someone was stuck.  I use the information learned from IC3 in my work today.  The beneficial part of the program was learning about computer applications, Microsoft office products which I use every day…”

Mary Ellen took the IC3 program in person after being a caregiver for years, including time out of the workforce: “It was really a fantastic way to come up to speed very quickly with computers.   The library is so welcoming to anyone and they really want people to learn, and the people here just embrace learning… If someone doesn't understand something the Instructors are willing to review it and make people feel comfortable that they can learn.  This is really where people are inclusive, it makes the experience so wonderful…It has given me a lot of confidence.  It brings pride from beginning to end.”

Grace took online remote classes during COVID: “The IC3 classes impacted me personally and professionally. Personally, because it enhanced my skills and made me feel better about myself during an unprecedented time. But when I did decide to try to find a job, during my interview, they asked, "Do you know how to [do this]?" And I was like, "Yes, I do." I was so grateful because we did a whole unit on it. We all have different seasons in our life, and I'm not really sure what my next season is going to be, but I do feel that the class has given me the opportunity to open up the potential to have whatever next season comes for me.”
