Rhythm and Praise: An Epic Journey of Black Gospel Music

Price Exhibition
Edwin Hawkins and Grover Washington
Photographs by
Brian Branch-Price

January 24 to March 7
In the Anne Louise Davis Gallery and Room 2 (lowel level)

The Plainfield Public Library announces a new exhibition in honor of Black History Month. Rhythm and Praise features over 90 photographs of notable Black gospel performers such as Donnie McKlurkin, Kirk Franklin, The Winans, The Clark Sisters, The Hawkin’s Family, Tye Tribbet, Cissy Houston, The Sensational Nightingales, The Dixie Humming Birds, Shirley Caeser, Grover Washington, Jr., Hezekiah Walker, The Russell Delegation, Mr. Clean, The Ward Singers, local adult and children’s choirs, and more.

Plainfielder, Brian Branch-Price is a New York metro photographer who currently contributes to Ebony, The Positive Community, Polaris Images, and various other magazines and publications. Formally an AP Staff photographer, he has since contracted for the New York Times and Daily News.

Branch-Price says, "I was born of an era where images make powerful statements. For me it became known as story telling, photojournalism, documentary, or fine art. I’d like to think of myself as an artist documenting a story by capturing and image, a compelling image, but nonetheless a moment in time that lives forever."

The exhibition is free to the public.

Recent Donations to the Local History Department

We recently received some wonderful donations:
  • AM Runyon / Memorial Funeral Home Records, donated by the Memorial Funeral Home. These records date from 1906 to 1996.  Librarians can access the files to assist patrons with genealogical research.
  • The French School of Music Collection, donated by Judy Mae Waters, dates from the 1920s to the 1990s. Selected records from this collection are currently on display on the main level. Special thanks to Dr. Owen Isaacs for his assistance.
  • Temple Sholom records, donated by the Temple's Board of Trustees. This collection dates back to 1964 and contains board minutes, photographs, event programs and other ephemera.
  • The Anne Louise Davis Collection, donated by her nephew Ted Davis. This collection contains plaques and awards given to Miss Davis, as well as photographs and newsclippings about her and her outstanding dedication to the City of Plainfield.  The collection also contains several of her fine art sculptures, some of which are currently on display on the main level.  During Women's History Month in March, we will exhibit more of the collection.

The Local History Department gratefully accepts these recent donations to our collections. Most donations are made by current or former Plainfield residents and organizations. For more information about how to make a donation, please contact the Local History Department.
