From the Desk of the Director...

We are almost halfway through Winter and already longing for Spring. However, February is packed with holidays and special events as we move through the final full month of Winter. This month we celebrate Black History Month, Valentine's Day and Presidents Day. We are excited to bring a selection of programming to celebrate all of these February events.

For Valentine’s Day we have an adult and teen coloring contest. Show your creativity and join us. The Children’s Department has a Black History Lego event along with their monthly selection of storytime, STEM and crafts. Chess Club has started again, so join us.

Local History has one event, a webinar on Saturday February 10, brought to us through the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. This webinar explores the story of the Forten Family through James Forten and his descendants as they navigated the American Revolution and the cross-racial relations in Philadelphia to later become leaders in the abolition movement in the years before the the Civil War.

On a different note, Passport Services are now in full swing. We now have staff with dedicated passport agent hours and have now extended passport hours to all our open hours including evenings and Saturdays.

If you are interested in honing your computer skills, we have upcoming courses in English and Spanish enrolling now for our Spring session beginning in April. These free courses always fill up quickly. If you or someone you know would like to learn more about computers and have a chance to graduate from the course with an employer-recognized certificate, act now!

As always, please feel free to make suggestions as to ways we can improve your experiences and fulfill your educational and entertainment needs at the Library.

We are here for you!

Happy New Year!

Mary Ellen

Plainfield High School Yearbooks Now Online!

PHS Yearbooks Now Online

Our entire collection of PHS Yearbooks has been digitized! Over the years, the yearbook has been called, "The Oracle," "The Spectator," "The Log," "The Kaleidoscope," and finally, "Milestone."

This is a nearly complete run, dating from the first yearbook in 1903 to 2023.

There are still five years missing: 2003, 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2022. If you have a copy of these years that you would be willing to donate or loan for scanning, please let us know!

Access the digital collection, here.

This digitization project was funded, in part, by a grant from the Internet Archive Community Webs program and by an operating support grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State.

Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia

This program is special presentation by the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. In this virtual exhibition,  a museum docent will introduce James Forten and his descendants as they navigated the American Revolution and cross-racial relationships in Philadelphia to become leaders in the abolition movement in the lead-up to the Civil War and the women's suffrage movement. Through objects, documents, and immersive environments, we will explore the Forten family’s roles in the Revolutionary War, business in Philadelphia, and abolition and voting rights from 1776 to 1876.

These programs are co-hosted by Plainfield Public Library and the Historical Society of Plainfield / Drake House Museum . Our programs are made possible in part by operating support grants from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State - additionally through a grant administered by the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, Department of Parks and Recreation; and by a 2024 HEART (History, Education, Arts Reaching Thousands) Grant from the Union County Board of County Commissioners.
