From the Desk of the Director...
Welcome back to your library!
We have all returned to working together in the library building and our services are now back to normal. You can browse the stacks, make appointments for service in Local History, go down to visit the Children’s Room and make appointments or just walk in on Mondays to Literacy.
With summer in full swing and Covid finally in the downturn there is much to enjoy both outdoors in Plainfield and here at the Library. We are planning some hybrid events that will take place both in person and virtually. Stay tuned both with news on our website and through Facebook. Zoom Balloons will do a Children’s program in Library Park and the Kona Ice Truck will be here. We have a YA outdoor tie-dye creation event. Zoom events will also be happening as well in Local History, Children’s and Adult services.
Summer is a great time for a beach read and I would like to recommend the latest book by President Clinton and James Patterson, entitled
The President’s Daughter. If you like action and intrigue this is the book for you. I am currently reading it and find it is hard to put down.
Come see us and chose your own favorite genre for summer reading. Remember you can borrow print, ebooks and audiobooks for free here at the Library.
Hope to see you soon,
Mary Ellen Rogan

NEW Service Changes from June 28th
As Director Rogan tells us above, we're back and ready to move our services closer to normal.
From June 28th, our public opening hours have increased to:
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: 9am -5pm
Tuesdays and Thursdays: 9am-5pm
The stacks are open for browsing once again, ( curbside service is still available if you prefer), and the main floor Reference, Tech Desk and Circulation desks are all now available for in-person service whenever we're open. Additionally, patrons can now visit the Children's room freely once again, and make appointments for Local History visits, while our Literacy department offers walk-in visiting on Mondays, alongside a range of ongoing services, and classes.
You'll be able to come use the computers for up to 2 hours once again, and we're working hard to make sure our remaining adaptations and changes to service can be resumed safely as soon as it's practicable to do so.
Our public bathrooms are
not currently available, because they are being remodelled and improved, so we hope to be able to reopen them with better facilities, later in the summer.
As per the City of Plainfield's general instructions for public buildings,
everyone should still wear a mask while inside the library, but we're getting much closer now to normal services.
For more information generally, please get in touch with the Reference Department, or for department-specific information you can aso get in touch with the other departments:
Our in-person services and hours pages at the Library Website are also kept updated with details of service changes in more detail.
We look forward to welcoming you back to your Library and hope that you'll come visit us soon!

In the Shadow of "The Honeymooners"
A personal story of local comedy writer Walter Stone Jr.
Presented by Nancy Piwowar
Saturday, July 10, 2021
10:30am via Zoom
Walter Stone, Jr., grew up and attended schools in Dunellen, NJ. He worked in both Dunellen and Plainfield before he answered a newspaper ad in 1950 for comedy writers. Eventually, he ended up working for Jackie Gleason, and was the only Gleason writer not to get fired.
Walter Stone was Nancy Piwowar’s uncle, and this is a personal story of where he lived and worked locally, his military service, commuting to New York City, and the local places he frequented. Pictures, telegrams, newspaper articles, and memorabilia will be shown from his family’s collection of early television history.
Nancy Piwowar is the President of the Historical Society of Plainfield / Drake House Museum. There will be time for Q&A following the presentation.
This program is co-hosted by Plainfield Public Library and the Historical Society of Plainfield / Drake House Museum.
This is a FREE program. REGISTER HERE: https://tinyurl.com/3cvzc9dw

Teen Writing Circle: Telling Tails
Thursday, June 24th, 2021
4pm via Zoom
Are you interested in writing? Do you write for fun? Maybe you already write poems or other creative works and are looking for others to share them with, or you would just like to get together with others and try writing.
Plainfield Public Library is starting a Teen Writers’ group for people ages 11-18! We will be meeting via Zoom on Thursday July 22nd at 4 pm. https://tinyurl.com/plainfield-teenwrites-July21
Riffing on theme of "Tales & Tails," we’ll warm up by writing Meme Captions for pictures from the Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards, then then try our hands at writing some Short Short stories of our own and sharing them.
Interested? Register for the zoom. If you can’t make it, but are still interested, email Jennifer.heise@plfdpl.info and we’ll make sure you’re on the list for the next one.
