Plainfield Public Library                                                                       July Update 2021
NEW Service Changes from June 28th- includes corrected times for Tuesdays and Thursdays to 7pm.

From June 28th, our public opening hours have increased to:
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: 9am - 5pm
Tuesdays and Thursdays: 9am-5pm
Update: in our last email we made a typo above- Tuesdays and Thursdays are actually 9am - 7pm

The stacks are open for browsing once again, (curbside service is still available if you prefer), and the main floor Reference, Tech Desk and Circulation desks are all now available for in-person service whenever we're open. Additionally, patrons can now visit the Children's room freely once again, and make appointments for Local History visits, while our Literacy department offers walk-in visiting on Mondays, alongside a range of ongoing services, and classes.

You'll be able to come use the computers for up to 2 hours once again, and we're working hard to make sure our remaining adaptations and changes to service can be resumed safely as soon as it's practicable to do so.

Our public bathrooms are not currently available, because they are being remodelled and improved, so we hope to be able to reopen them with better facilities, later in the summer.

As per the City of Plainfield's general instructions for public buildings, everyone should still wear a mask while inside the library, but we're getting much closer now to normal services.

For more information generally, please get in touch with the Reference Department, or for department-specific information you can aso get in touch with the other departments:

We look forward to welcoming you back to your Library and hope that you'll come visit us soon!
Summer Reading is here! (And it's not only for kids!)

You've seen the outside.

It's hot out there, and what could be cooler than a plunge in the ocean? That's just one reason why our logo for this year's Adult Summer Reading theme is a nice cool whale (reading a book, naturally).

Another is that if you're going to follow along with the animal-books theme, you could do worse than pick up Moby Dick for a (kind of hefty, we admit) beach read, or maybe yours is more of a Lilian Jackson Braun cats-as-detectives deal? Whatever you do to make Summer Reading your own, we're here for you.

Meanwhile, why not try out our Summer Reading Quiz via Facebook to test your knowledge of Animal-Adjacent-Literature (did we just invent a new genre?) -

Also! Summer Reading is very much for kids too!

Don't forget to sign up with the Children's Library for their Summer Reading accounts on Beanstack to record your progress and earn fun, prizes and learn new things through reading!

We're stocking up on materials, matching up with schools' summer reading lists, and creating a whole load of fun activities and crafts. You can check out exactly what's going on on the library calendar and catch up on all the forthcoming Summer Reading fun!

Lots of our events for kids are online now; sign up and stay tuned for fun activities this summer like the upcoming adventures from Page Turner Animal Adventures!

In the Shadow of "The Honeymooners"

A personal story of local comedy writer Walter Stone Jr.

Presented by Nancy Piwowar

Saturday, July 10, 2021

10:30am via Zoom

Walter Stone, Jr., grew up and attended schools in Dunellen, NJ. He worked in both Dunellen and Plainfield before he answered a newspaper ad in 1950 for comedy writers. Eventually, he ended up working for Jackie Gleason, and was the only Gleason writer not to get fired.

Walter Stone was Nancy Piwowar’s uncle, and this is a personal story of where he lived and worked locally, his military service, commuting to New York City, and the local places he frequented. Pictures, telegrams, newspaper articles, and memorabilia will be shown from his family’s collection of early television history.

Nancy Piwowar is the President of the Historical Society of Plainfield / Drake House Museum. There will be time for Q&A following the presentation.

This program is co-hosted by Plainfield Public Library and the Historical Society of Plainfield / Drake House Museum.
