Plainfield and the Great War
WWI Soldiers Leave for Duty
Photograph by Paul R. Collier

Now on Exhibit!

The Library announces our latest Local History Department exhibit commemorating the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I. The Library is displaying a variety of materials from our historical collections of photographs, documents, ephemera, and newspaper advertisements. Photographs include images of Plainfield’s Home Defense League and volunteer nurses, as well as Plainfield soldiers in Troop D, Company K, and the famous all-Black regiment, the Harlem Hellfighters.

Four featured items come from the Library’s collection of original World War I publicity posters. These stunning lithographs are temporarily housed in archival-quality frames that protect them from deterioration while on display. Funding for the special framing was provided by the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State.

The displays are located on the main reading room wall and in two display cases, near the Reference Desk, on the main level of the Library. The exhibit will run through June 2017 and is free to the public.

Criminal Justice Reform
Thursday, June 27, 2017
7 to 8 pm in the ALD Room (lower level)

On January 1, 2017, the New Jersey bail reform/speedy trial law (L. 2014, c. 31), went into effect. This new law represents one of the most dramatic changes to our criminal justice system in many years. New Jersey has shifted from a system in which a defendant’s pretrial release is dependent upon his or her ability to post monetary bail, to one in which the defendant’s release is dependent upon his or her risk of failing to appear for court and the danger that he or she presents to the community.

Join us for this free workshop to further explain the new law and discuss the implementations. For more information, please contact 908-659-4644 or 908-659-4646.
