The Summer Reading Calendar is available and there are events and prizes for all ages…children, teens and adults. Please sign up to be part of our summer activities and fun!
Summer is a great time for hobbies and family outings. For the gardeners in town, check out our selection of gardening books. (Or check out our short film on books about gardening in small spaces and containers, here.) Our staff gardener is already planting his tomatoes! Outdoor activities are a great way to spend quality time. Look for suggestions in our Museum Pass Program or try our books on hiking, traveling and outdoor sports.
Genealogy is another hobby that I am particularly fond of. Though not a summer-only hobby, summer is a great time to visit places where your family used to live and see points of interest. There is also a selection of genealogy and local history books on display for those armchair historians interested in exploring family history. Whatever hobby you enjoy, you're likely to find a magazine covering your interest among over 4000 titles available through our online magazine service.
As you all know, reading is one of my fun activities and is a great activity for relaxing at the beach or pool. I would like to recommend a new book coming out in June entitled
A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong. It is a time travel novel of a 21st century police detective who finds herself in 19th century Scotland solving a serial murder. First in a new series, I am already looking forward to the next installment.
Both our teen and adult summer reading events have places where you can log books and activities for a chance at prizes. Maybe
A Rip Through Time is a good choice for you? If not, the Library has a vast selection of new fiction and non-fiction to choose from, either in hardcopy or ebook. Ask our reference staff for suggestions if you want to try something new.
Please come see us and take part in our Summer Reading Program. There is always something to do at the Library.

BECOME A TUTOR: CHANGE TWO LIVES
As we open up again for in-person programs the Plainfield Public Library is currently looking to recruit volunteer tutors to help local residents learn English, become citizens, pass the GED, and find employment.
Everyone owes some of their success to the great teachers they have had. Now you can be that someone who makes all the difference.
No Experience? No problem.
The Library provides simple, straightforward, and ongoing tutor training and support.
Tutors are never left to fend for themselves. After the initial training, support is always available from PPL’s dedicated Literacy staff and other fellow tutors. Signing up means joining a strong team of likeminded and socially-caring volunteers ready to support each other.
Training and scheduling are flexible and can be tailored to personal availability. Devoting just a few hours to this vital and worthwhile program can lead to dramatic improvements in our community.
To find out more about this meaningful volunteer opportunity, please call (908)757-1111 ext. 122 or email literacy@plfdpl.info.
