FOOD FOR FINES

The “Food for Fines” program, run by the Circulation department every year during the holiday season, ended January 2, 2014. The library surpassed its goal by 152 items and beat our 2012 collection by over 200 pounds! All items received were donated to Star Fish.

During the month of March, the Children's Room will be hosting a Dr. Seuss Extravaganza with stories, crafts, movies and a special performance.  You may also come and get a picture taken with one of our Dr. Seuss props!

Local Author's Event
 
On Saturday, March 22, The Plainfield Public Library will sponsor a book signing event from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.  Seven New Jersey authors will meet the public and share their peak to library visitors about their latest writings.  These books will be available for sale and their authors will be on hand to autograph any purchased titles. 

The featured works represent a diversity of categories including fiction, non-fiction, self-help and history.  Authors scheduled to appear include Nellie Dixon, former resident and arts activist;  Joanne Rajoppi, Union County Clerk; Dr. Thomas Brown, retired President of Union County College; and Linda Barth, NJ Canal Historian.   Other authors include Janet Hilliman, Azuka Zuke, and Eric Nierstedt, son of renowned cyclist Bill Nierstedt.

 Mary Ellen Rogan, Assistant Director of the Plainfield Public Library, encourages the public to “join us for what promises to be a wonderful event bringing readers and authors together in an informal setting.”

Digital Art Studio

The Plainfield Public Library has been awarded a grant via the “New Jersey Library Makerspaces – The Leading Edge” project to fund the “Enterprise Zone” that will open later this year. The Enterprise Zone will feature a digital drawing tablet and professional design software that will enable artists to explore new techniques. The equipment is expected to appeal to designers, craftsmen, hobbyists, and graphic arts students. A large-format scanner/printer will allow users to generate prints up to 36” wide for patternmaking, portfolios, art projects and advertising.

Computer Classes


The Library’s next set of Computer Classes will run through April 2. Please visit the Reference Desk to register. Also, the Library offers Drop-In Classes and Individual Training (by appointment only) on Fridays in the Job Search Assistance Center. Click here for more information about computer training.

2013 Tax Information

Federal Tax Forms have arrived! The forms are available on a red cart next to the pillar by the Circulation Department. The State of New Jersey no longer distributes tax forms. The majority of Federal and State forms are available online at http://www.irs.gov/Forms-&-Pubs (Federal) or http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/prntgit.shtml (State). If you need a form that is not on the cart please visit the Reference Desk. There is a set of Federal reproducible forms that can be photocopied for $0.10 per page or the Reference Staff can access the forms online and print them out for $0.20 per page. Hardcopies of the NJ State 1040 forms are available for $0.50 each.

AARP Tax Preparation
 
The AARP is providing FREE Tax preparation services at the Plainfield Public Library on Tuesday and Saturdays from 9AM-1PM until April 15th. Appointments are REQUIRED and can be made by calling the Plainfield Senior Center at 908-753-3506.

The Library now has FREE downloadable music via our Freegal service. Cardholders can download up to three songs or one song and one music video per week. Popular available artists include Shakira, A Great Big World, and Pharrell Williams among many others. A wide variety of genres are available including children’s music from KidzBop, country music from Miranda Lambert, and a wide selection of rock, pop, jazz and classical.
We also provide FREE eBooks and eAudiobooks via eLibrarynj.com and OneClickDigital; and FREE digital magazines via Zinio. You will need a current Plainfield Public Library card and your PIN code to access these services. Please visit the Circulation Desk with your library card and a form of photo ID to receive your PIN code.
