From the Desk of the Director...

Library Director Mary Ellen Rogan

March is Women’s History Month. A salute to both the famous and the not so famous and the ones that are in our lives and special!

2020 is the anniversary of suffrage and women getting the right to vote. The almost 100 years of struggle was finally won with the passage of the 19th amendment on August 18, 1920. Plainfield's own Lillian Ford Feickert was an American suffragette, a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union,  and the New Jersey Woman Suffrage Association.

The Library is celebrating the month with a special event reminding us of those great women in history. On March 28 at 10:30am, co-sponsored by the Drake House, Dr. Daisy Century will be portraying Sojourner Truth, an abolitionist and women’s rights activist. In the 19th century Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree, forged the way for women while Lillian Feickert picked up the cause in the 20th century.

March is the birthday of Dr. Seuss and the Children’s Department is celebrating with a birthday party. A photo op will be available for kids to take pictures as the Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 & 2. Other Children’s events include a mystery program, movies, and a craft project for Spring. Teens have a Game Day scheduled on March 7 at 1:30pm. Come and enjoy the challenge!

This month we are featuring two sewing workshop programs for teens and adults, the first on March 10 and the second on March 31, both at 6:00pm. Sewing machines will be provided. In addition, March 21 is Maker’s Day, so come and enjoy a day of DIY.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about our programming or any Library issues, we are here for you!

Sojourner Truth
Portrayed by Dr. Daisy Century
Saturday, March 28, 2020
10:30am in the Anne Louise Davis Room

Dr. Daisy Century gives a commanding performance of Sojourner Truth, bringing to life a woman undeterred by incredible obstacles, a woman who mixed with the leading figures of her day, including Susan B. Anthony, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.

Sojourner Truth began speaking out for women's suffrage in 1850. Believing the causes of abolition and women's rights to be intertwined and equally important. Ms. Truth's most quoted speech, "Ain't I a Woman?" was delivered at the Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio.

Audience members are urged to consider the twin goals of racial and gender parity of equal importance. The audience will have the opportunity to sign Sojourner Truth’s "Book of Life," signifying their connection to Ms. Truth’s legacy.

This program is free and open to the public.

This program is co-sponsored by Historical Society of Plainfield / Drake House Museum.
