New Beginnings for Senior Space

The Library has been privileged to host regular Senior Space activities in partnership with United Methodist Communities (whose Covenant Place facility is right here in Plainfield).

Senior Space will soon be moving to a new location instead of continuing at the Library. Our last Senior Space event here was on April 25th, and the program will restart at Covenant Place (details below) in late June.

In its new location, Senior Space will continue to offer seniors a range of free activities, from crafts and presentations, to information sessions, exercise and movement programs, and more.

If you, or a Senior Citizen you know, would like to take advantage of this free program open to all Seniors, starting in late June, the new location and contact details are:

Senior Space at Covenant Place
623 E Front St, Plainfield, NJ 07060
908-791-9430  seniorspace@gmail.com

To find out more, including program details and exact starting dates and times, you can get in touch with the program organizers using the information above.

The Library thanks Senior Space and their staff for helping provide several years of quality programming for Seniors, and we wish them every success in their new location.
Museum Pass Program News

As many Patrons will know, the Library offers a range of Museum Passes for discounts, free passes and group offers for a variety of nearby attractions - free to all Plainfield Library Patrons.

Because this service is in partnership with a number of other organizations, agreements and conditions of the offers we can provide change from time to time, and this means that while new things sometimes become available, it also means that some offers come to an end.

This is the case with our Turtle Back Zoo offer - the Zoo is changing tack and won't be offering libraries this kind of pass any more - but do look out for the Library's other passes including epic days out on the USS Intrepid, the Children's Museum of Art, NY Historical Society and more!

We refresh the range of passes we offer regularly, so check back with our Museum Passes page or get in touch with staff on 908-757-1111 x111 to see what's new.
Genealogists Getting Organized
Getting Organized with Genealogist Beverly Yackel
Saturday, May 4th
10:30am in Room 2 (lower level)

Keeping track of documents, notes, websites, photographs, and correspondence related to genealogy research can be daunting.

All of that information accumulates faster than we can manage to document it and to file it away in an organized manner. Developing a filing system is a must!

Beverly Yackel, past president of the Monmouth County Genealogy Society, will explain how to record and store vital information for your family history research.

This program is free and open to the public.  Seating is Limited. Registration requested, call 908-757-1111 x136.

John Grady Arlington House
Historic Plainfield with John Grady
Saturday, May 11th
1 to 3 pm in the ALD Room (lower level)**

Help us welcome back to Plainfield author, collector, and history lover, John Grady. John will present a slide show and talk about the architecture and historic areas of Plainfield.

On display at this time is the John Grady Historical Collection, 1840-2011.
This outstanding collection is one of the largest archival collections held by the library, and contains a variety of materials that date back almost two centuries. The exhibit displays highlights from the collection, and consists of wall exhibits and display cases on both levels of the library.  A selection of the collection’s photographs by John Hoffman, Reina Lawrence, and Paul R. Collier will be on display, as well as a variety of vintage Plainfield postcards, rare historical artifacts & ephemera, and other Plainfield memorabilia.

John Grady's & Dorothe Pollard's book, Plainfield, New Jersey’s History & Architecture, will be available for purchase on site before and after his lecture, courtesy of the Historical Society of Plainfield ($30 cash or check made payable to the Historical Society of Plainfield).

This program is free and open to the public.

** This is a special after-hours program. The library will not be open for regular usage during the program, and the building will close at 3 pm.

Card Signup Event at Plainfield High School

Unfortunately, many High School students still don't have a Public Library Card and are missing out on not just the Library's books and media collections, but also the huge range of databases and research materials they'd get for free through their library card including online tutoring through BrainFuse Get Help, language learning through Rosetta Stone, courses in all things computer-related with Lynda.com and much more. (See our online databases page for further details of 50+ free online services offered through the Library).

We're going to be partnering with Plainfield High School's Library Media Specialist, Mr Lainson, to do on-site signups for students on Wednesday May 22nd and Friday May 24th, throughout the school's lunch periods. If you or people you know have high school students who need a library card, let them know this is their chance to do it while they are at school!
