As ever though, the interactions we have with our patrons are as important as any statistic, and we look forward to continuing to be a place where the community gathers for fun, for learning, and to make memories together.

Writers' Panel Discussion and Q&A

If you have thought or dreamed of becoming a writer or if you are a writer and want some great tips on how to market, edit, or get an agent, this is the place for you!
Join author and playwright Anthony Giordano in conversation with authors Yvonne Ventresca, Cecilia Y. Saint-Denis, Brian McKinley, and M. Flagg. We'll discuss trials, tribulations, and success in the worlds of writing and publishing, before opening up to the audience for questions.
If you've been wanting to learn more, this is a great chance to speak with some seasoned writers about their experiences, challenges and triumphs.
Adult Book Club

Our May installment of our book club for Adults will meet to discuss
The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. Our friendly group is open to all who'd like to come and discuss the book - just pop in!
We also have a limited number of copies of the book for Book Club attendees if you'd like to take part. Come join us on Wednesday, May 29th from 7pm in room 5 (even if you just want to get a feel for how it goes)!
You can also look out for our other programs over the month - many of our teen programs are all ages and welcome adults too - just check on the event posters or drop us a line. :)

In honor of May as Mental Health Month, the Queen City Film & Television Workshop has assembled a powerful block of short films to explore various mental health issues facing the community.
Three works from different perspectives, telling the stories of individuals impacted by mental health issues and the devastating effect that it can have if left unchecked. Moderator Diandra Marie, the visionary behind "Limitless Visions," is a self-taught videographer, cinematographer, and content creator.

Local History, Genealogy & Special Collections
The Plainfield Room is open for historical and genealogical research. Our hours are Monday-Friday, 9AM to 4:45PM and Tuesdays from 9AM to 7PM. Please contact us to schedule an appointment. The Memoir Writing Club meets on May 9, 2024; the writing topic is "family." All are welcome!

Introduction to African American Genealogy with Janice Cross-Gilyard
Learn about the research tools and techniques to get started in African American genealogy research, and how to keep going!
Janice Cross-Gilyard is a Charter Member of The Harriet Tubman Chapter of Sons & Daughters of the United States Middle Passage. She joined the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) – New Jersey Chapter in March of 2016 and served two terms as President. Janice is the Editor of the Family Times Newsletter for AAHGS – NJ Chapter. In August of 2021, she became the co-host of her first podcast, Speak On It! History & Genealogy Conversations with Janice & Cherekana.

Union County Teen Arts Touring Exhibit
The Union County Board of Commissioners is pleased to present the 2024 Union County Teen Arts Touring Exhibit, now on display at Plainfield Public Library. The Teen Arts Touring Exhibit features art work selected from the visual art works shown at the 2023 Union County Teen Arts Festival held at Trailside in the Watchung Reservation. The annual event is administered by the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs in the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The exhibit is located in the Anne Louise Davis room. It is free and open to the public during regular Library hours, when the room is not in use. The exhibit will run from April 1 until May 11, 2024.

May at the Children's Library
Kids and their grown ups can look forward to some great free programs at the Children's Library this month.
We'll also have lots of the storytimes and crafts kids and their library grownups love, as well as educational activities including STEAM and cooking programs.

Taking Good Care During Mental Health Awareness Month
As part of Mental Health Awareness Month through May, we've teamed up with Prevention Links NJ4S to offer a pair of guided workshops:
- Managing Anxiety for Teens and their families will run on Tuesday, May 7 from 6:30pm (and will include pizza for participants!). Please preregister here.
- Self-Care for Teens (ages 10+) will run on Thursday, May 9 from 3:30pm featuring self-care techniques, and will also include a crafting workshop to create a DIY stress ball.
As well as some additional workshops on the theme:
- Make a Worry Doll (ages 9+) on Wednesday, May 15 from 3:30pm.
- Teen Resources Fair featuring providers and resources for a wide variety of issues and life events affecting teens on Wednesday, May 22 from 3pm.
