From the Desk of the Director...

Library Director Mary Ellen Rogan
Hi All!

I hope you are all enjoying our autumn weather. Not too cold or hot, it is a great time for being outdoors.

As I told everyone last month, we are back and continuing our services. Plenty of things to enjoy through Zoom. We're continuing our latest live serialization of a classic novel, the Children’s staff has their story-times as does our Councilman Barry Goode with his monthly reading. In addition, the Children’s staff has STEAM programming this month and takeaway Harvest crafts to pick up for at-home entertainment.

I just finished judging the Pets of Plainfield Photo Contest and I must say that Plainfield has quite a number of cute and attractive pets. Come look at the photos online and think about participating next year when we announce a new topic.

Local History and the Drake House are partnering with history and genealogy events during the month. Come to the interviewing tips webinar and learn how to get a family history discussion going over the holidays.

Food for Fines starts the middle of the month and we are once again collecting food and pet food for those in need. Bring in a lost book, pay a fine or just donate with non-perishable food!

Both Election Day and Veterans Day fall in November so remember to cast your vote and thank a veteran for their service. Speaking of holidays, the Library has wonderful cookbooks and craft book ideas to make Thanksgiving a memorable event. As our premiere food holiday, what better than a new recipe or a twist on an old family favorite? Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday and this year I am especially thankful for not only my family but for the Library staff and all of you and the support you have shown the Library through this most stressful and difficult year.

Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving and see you at the Library!

Pets of Plainfield
Plainfield Public Library Annual Photography Competition 2021
Winners Announced!

"City Howl" by Michael Kasprzak
"City Howl" by Michael Kasprzak

We asked our Plainfield Patrons to submit pictures for our annual Photography Competition on the theme of "Pets of Plainfield" and we had some great entries. Thank you to everyone who took part. We got lots of entries that showed off some of the best qualities of our creature companions. But did you know that they also do "noble"?

This portrait of Woodford (the canine superhero above) is our overall winner this year for this capture that frames him against the backdrop of our City Hall, by Michael Kasprzak.

We also had great entries from our runners-up Sara Johnston and Arshad Ganie, and many more. All of the entries for our previous competitions can be viewed online - all the 2021 entries will shortly become available there, too.

Each year we hold a new competition on a new Plainfield theme, and each year our Patrons wow us with their creative vision and capabilities. What should next year's theme be to help us celebrate the life and history of our city? Get in touch and let us know your ideas!
Food for Fines
November 15th - December 30th, 2021.

Patrons who've been with us for a while will remember our annual Food For Fines drive - we're pleased to say that it is back again for 2021!  This year's Food for Fines starts up in mid-November and will run to the end of the year.

Have Library books at home that are VERY overdue and marked as lost? Return the book(s) along with 10 cans/boxes of food PER LOST ITEM and you will have NO FINES OR FEES added to your record.

Just have fines? You can bring up to 10 cans per card holder and each can/box = $1 in fines.

Clear your account and do good at the same time!

Non-fine related donations are gratefully accepted. All food items received will be donated to a local food bank. Pet food donations will be given to the Plainfield Area Humane Society.

Plainfield Public Library's Digital Literacy Program selected as a model for services in other Libraries

We're a Hub! We've partnered with other institutions to facilitate adoption of our successful Digital Literacy Training Program, which will see a number of other libraries across the state roll out new initiatives based on service and practices developed here in Plainfield.

Building on the success of the Plainfield Public Library's Digital Literacy training program, The New Jersey State Library (NJSL), an affiliate of Thomas Edison State University, has selected 14 public libraries to participate in its Hub & Spoke Libraries pilot project. This initiative will provide uniform digital literacy training and credentialing for adult residents across the state by creating and implementing a standardized and replicable library-based digital literacy certification program to assist New Jersey’s workforce. The Plainfield Public Library and its staff will support these grantees in adopting methods based on the proven Plainfield Public Library service model.

Hub and spoke libraries will connect with their local Workforce Development Boards and American Job Centers, as well as other libraries in the area, to create a referral and sending system that includes consistent client intake, record keeping, and data sharing. Participants will have access to free, high quality training materials, videos, classroom aides, and mini lessons.

Spoke Libraries:

  • Bradley Beach Public Library
  • Burlington County Public Library
  • Cumberland County Public Library
  • Florham Park Public Library
  • Gloucester City Public Library
  • Gloucester County Public Library System
  • Newark Public Library
  • South Brunswick Public Library
  • Trenton Public Library
  • Union City Public Library
  • West Orange Public Library

This project was made possible through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds made available to the New Jersey State Library through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Through its NJSL + Partners Literacy Project, the State Library will pilot two models for providing literacy services in public libraries, with the overarching goal of showcasing libraries as literacy destinations in communities across the state. The Hub & Spoke Libraries pilot project is the first to launch. The second literacy pilot project will be announced late fall. For more information, visit: www.njstatelib.org/ARPALiteracyProject.

Tips for Interviewing Relatives

Saturday, November 6, 2021
10:30am via Zoom
Presented by Stephanie Call (AmericanAncestors & NEHGS)

Just in time for the upcoming holidays! The oral tradition of a family is perhaps just as important as the evidence you find in document-based research. Even if you learn that not all of the details are 100% accurate, these stories provide important clues to begin—or continue—your research, give life to names and dates on a page, and may provide information not found in records. But how do you start the conversation, stay on track, and record the information provided? This webinar will offer some valuable tips and techniques for interviewing relatives—and suggest strategies for encouraging family to talk!

Stephanie Call is the Associate Director of Archives and Education at the Wyner Family Jewish Heritage Center at New England Historic Genealogical Society. She is responsible for overseeing the JHC archival collections, creating educational programming and content, and conducting outreach. Stephanie received a B.A. in English and Jewish Studies from Mount Holyoke College and a M.S. in Library and Information Science with a concentration in Archives Management from Simmons College. She is a member of the Society of American Archivists and the New England Archivists.

There will be time for Q&A following the presentation. This program will not be recorded.

This program is co-hosted by Plainfield Public Library and the Historical Society of Plainfield / Drake House Museum.

This FREE program is open to all.
