From the Desk of the Director...
Fall is the time of year when we begin to think of indoor activities and holiday preparations. Family, cooking and crafts become a focus as we prepare for colder weather and traditional holiday times of the year. This year as you get ready, think of the resources you can find at the library.
Follow craft ideas though our programs and the library collections. Make personal gifts this year. It not only saves money but gives a bit of yourself to the recipient. View the genealogy collection on the first floor to get ideas for personal family gifts. I use photos taken through the year to create calendars as gifts for my family. It has become a tradition that everyone looks forward to receiving. This year I will also be making a family tree book for each of my grandchildren which will include facts and photographs of at least 4 generations. As a genealogist it is a way that I can pass along to the next generation the information I have researched and uncovered about my family.
Let’s not forget cooking! The library collection of cookbooks is quite good with recipes for the traditional as well as the new. You can personalize your homemade food items as well. When you gift someone with cookies or cakes over the holidays, add the recipe and if it’s an old family favorite, perhaps a story about the family member you who gave you that recipe.
After the past two years of COVID isolation, celebrate the personal and precious this year. Use our resources to help with your projects and ideas. Send us a picture or a note about what you have found at the library. We want to see and hear from you.
Enjoy the fall weather, I know I will!

Teen Craft Program:
How to Wear A Sheep: Fiber arts Demo and Drop-Spinning Workshop
October 11th
- Demonstration 4-5:30pm
- Workshop 6:30 - 8pm
Room 5
What’s a loom? Does it hurt a sheep to lose their wool? How does a spinning wheel work? What’s a ‘drop spindle’? Hey, can I try that?
Wool, cotton, linen and all other fibers have a long journey to your closet. Though factories now do much of the carding, spinning, weaving and knitting is now done in factories, many people also have taken them up as hobbies.
Plainfield Public Library has invited textile artisan Sarah Fiedler, who previously did a felted wool ball workshop for us, back for a demonstration of the processes that make fiber into cloth. Join us on October11 in room 5. All ages are invited, 4:00 to 5:30 pm
Want to try it yourself? After the demonstration, there will be a free class on spinning wool with a drop spindle for ages 12 and up. Class space is limited, so please pre-register. Wool and spindles will be provided, though if you have are welcome to bring your own. Workshop will be 6:30 to 8:00 pm.
Any fiber artists who would like to drop in for a Spin-In are also invited!

Kindness Rocks Plainfield
Free Craft for tweens, teens and adults
October 20th
3-5pm
Room 2
What are Kindness Rocks?
What’s that you found the ground? A painted rock! Hey, that’s exciting!
You may have seen painted stones and pebbles, perhaps with encouraging sayings, left in public places for others to pick up. This practice has been referred to by several names, including just “painted rocks” and “kindness rocks”.
Basically, it’s about both making and sharing a tiny piece of art, a way to encourage each other.
Join us to paint Kindness Rocks (pebbles, acrylic paints, and all supplies provided) to be placed outside for others to find and enjoy. Of course, if you paint a stone and find you just can’t let it go, you can keep it!
Kindness Rock painting workshops (open to teens, tweens and adults):
- Glow in the Dark Kindness Rocks: Thursday October 20. 3-5pm in Room 2
Rocks, paints, markers and sealant all supplied. Finished rocks chosen for distribution will be preserved with an acrylic sealant and placed in Library Park. If you find one, pick it up, cherish it, and then reposition it for someone else to find!
For more about Kindness Rocks/Painted Rocks, see:
