Fall is on its way and Plainfield Public Library has a selection of new and continuing programs to engage patrons of all ages. Read on to check out upcoming movies, concerts, fairs, crafts and more.

Don't forget that September 3rd will also see the library return to its normal operating hours with later Thursday and Saturday opening than in the summer. (See the hours section  for full details).

Children's Programs for September

September means children are back at school and the Children's library includes some back-to-school themed programming as well as the movies and storytime that runs throughout the year. Look out also for the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration on the 15th from 1-3pm, featuring a live dance performance and food from local Latin restaurants.



 


Adult and YA Summer Reading Challenge Draw

The prize draw for our Adult & Young Adult Summer Reading Challenge will take place on September 4th, and winning competitors who submitted their entries before the deadline of September 1st, will have a chance to win prizes including one of our Libraries Rock rubber duckies, a $10 credit against library printing or charges, or one of 2 Amazon Kindle Fire 7s.

If you entered, and took on the challenges (including "check out a book the same color as your shoes" and "what would the theme song of the Plainfield Public Library be?"), good luck!

Winning entries will be informed via the contact details they provide on their form.
Afternoon Films for Adults at the Library
from October 2nd


Love your Library? Love Cinema? See what's on in the Anne Louise Davis Room!

Our new season of afternoon movies will kick off with the film Book Club (2018), a romantic comedy starring Diane Keaton, Mary Steenbergen, Candice Burgen and Jane Fonda, followed on the 16th by Black Panther (2018) starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Danai Gurira.

Many more films follow, so keep an eye on the billing and don't miss a chance to see your favorites on our big screen!

Concert - Image and Sound with Itay Goren
Saturday, October 6th
2pm in the Anne Louise Davis Room

Itay Goren will showcase the music of Schuman, Debussy and Mussorgsky in October with a free concert on a Saturday afternoon. Please join us as Itay Goren entertains on piano with this selection of beautiful music.


Senior Space - Wednesday Mornings in September


Wednesday mornings are our regular Senior Space spot in collaboration with Covenant Place and AngelaCARES, with free regular entertainment, light exercise and information sessions, as well as snacks and light refreshments for Senior attendees.

Highlights in the coming weeks include:

Indoor Picnic - September 5th, 10-11:45am 
Meditation with So Shim Za Zen Center - September 5th and 26th, 1-2pm
Make your own Sugar Scrub - September 12th, 10:15-11:45am 
Sip & Paint -  September 12th, 12-1:30pm
Yoga for Seniors - September 12th and 26th, 10:30-11:45am

Senior Space also means a member of Covenant Place staff will be on hand for free advice on matters affecting seniors every week.
Teen programs for September


Fun and learning for teen patrons continues into the Fall with programs on coding, electronics and stop-motion animation.

Code Combat continues its run, with participants learning to code in Python by having their character complete adventure quests (Computer Lab, 4-5pm 9/10 and 9/17).
Build a better Bleep uses Snap Circuits to create simple electronics projects (Room 5, 4-5pm 9/12)
Stop Motion Studio uses an app to help users collaborate on simple stop motion animation films. Room 2, 3-5pm, 9/20)

Plainfield Public Library is happy to announce the 2018 Tri-County History Fair for Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties.  Join your colleagues, friends, and neighbors for a fun day of historical discovery, resource sharing, raffles, and more.

Between lectures, there will be a free antique appraisal session provided by Winterhill Antiques of Scotch Plains.


Visitors can win the raffle grand prize of an AncestryDNA testing kit! Attendees will receive one free raffle ticket upon fair entry. All activities will be indoors on the lower level and are free to the public.The Plainfield Public Library is an ADA-accessible facility.

Plainfield Genealogy Club

Are you interested in researching your family history? Join us for the next meeting of the Plainfield Genealogy Club. You do not have to be a Plainfield resident to join the club. Come and meet with other family researchers, trade tricks, and learn about a variety of helpful resources. Learn more here.

Memoir Writing Club
Thursday, September 13th
10:30 am in room 8 (lower level)

This month's optional writing topic is "Being Far From Home".

The Library's Memoir Writing Club offers members a comfortable forum for sharing stories of important events, friendships, and family history. Do you have memories that you would like to share? Come join the Memoir Writing Club. Before a session, participants write down their memories - creating a Memoir. During meetings, members share what they've written on a topic. At the end of each meeting the group chooses an optional topic for the next session, but individual members are free to write about whatever inspires them.

The Library's Summer Hours end on September 3rd, returning us to normal hours of operation in September, with the sole exception of Saturday, September 1st, which will see the Library close at 1pm.

Please note that the Library will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 3rd.

The library will also be closed for the day during the PMUA fair taking place in Library Park on Friday, September 8th.
