From the Desk of the Director...

Library Director Mary Ellen Rogan

September is shaping up to be an exciting month at the Library.  Events for adults, children and teens abound.  My personal favorite for the month is the 4th Annual Tri-County History Fair highlighting the history of our area.  Come join us as we showcase 20 of our area organizations and historical societies with displays, free raffles and information on what Central Jersey has to offer.

This year our speakers include Carol Simon Levin who portrays Plainfielder and suffragette, Lillian Feickert.  Learn about the suffrage movement through the eyes of a Plainfield resident as we time travel to the early 20th century.  After lunch, Dr. Lawrence Hogan will enlighten us on the history of the Associated Negro Press and the service it provided to the black community throughout the nation.

Do you have old tapes you want to digitize?  Come speak to the experts from IDI.  There will be an area to purchase light refreshments or you can bring your lunch and visit with friends and neighbors.

September's Afternoon Films for Adults at the Library

We've got some fine selections for you this month for bi-weekly Tuesday afternoon movies. Come on in, take a seat in our downstairs ALD auditorium, and be entertained!

The Public (2018): "An act of civil disobedience turns into a standoff with police when homeless people in Cincinnati take over the public library to seek shelter from the bitter cold." (IMDB) Starring Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling, Emilio Estevez. Showing September 3rd.

Shazam! (2019): "We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson's case, by shouting out one word - SHAZAM - this streetwise fourteen-year-old foster kid can turn into the grown-up superhero Shazam." (IMDB) Starring Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel. Showing September 17th at 1pm in ALD.

Keep an eye on the billing and don't miss a chance to see your favorites on our big screen!

National Voter Registration Day
Tuesday, September 24th, 3-6pm
Main Floor

National Voter Registration day promotes the full participation of US citizens in the voting process, held every 4th Tuesday in September.

This year the Libary will host the League of Women Voters (12-3) and the Union County Board of Elections (3-6) on the main floor, registering people to vote.

Every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote.

If you have are registering to vote, need to change registration details, or have any questions or concerns around the registration and voting process, don't miss this free event.

Welcome, New Plainfield Teachers!

We were privileged to host around 50 teachers new to the Plainfield Public School District on 8/26, as part of their orientation. This was a chance to let them know all about the many services the Library offers for students and to teachers, from useful databases, to creating reading lists and research aids.

One highlight was our new BrainFuse Help Now service, which is free to all library card holders.

Did you know that Help Now offers 1-to1 online tutor help from 2-11pm, 7 days a week? Students K-12 (and college!) can get dedicated help from a live tutor in a great range of subjects, with most also offering both English and Spanish-speaking tutors. Brain Fuse Help Now also offers great testing, study and revision materials, as well as a platform for students to collaborate on projects.

To access BrainFuse Help Now (along with dozens of other services, including BrainFuse's products for Job Search assistance and Veterans' services), visit the Library's Online Databases portal. It's important to access the services via this page so that you can access the databases for free. You'll just need your library card details, and the majority of the services are available both at the library and in the comfort of your home or favorite wifi haunt!

We're looking forward to serving the teachers and students of Plainfield as part of our mission to provide access to information for all.
September Programs for Teens

Fantastic! Summer is over and it's time to go back to school! Everyone is thrilled, right?

Even we ancient librarians remember going back to school at the end of the summer and although it was great to catch up with friends we hadn't seen, and settle back into a routine (and, not least, learn fascinating new stuff!), we do remember that there was a certain bittersweet quality to heading back to school after the summer break.

We're here to help you settle back in (e.g. check out some of the online tutor stuff we have available in the story above), but also to keep you going with some fun activities to start the Fall semester:

Art Club on September 3rd  (4pm in Room 5) will offer a chance to do something creative and expressive.

Our Fluxx card gaming session will be on September 9th at 4pm in Room 5 and will challenge you to keep up with the ever changing crazy rules of Fluxx.

September 16th is the day for our General Knowledge Prize Quiz for teens, challenging you with trivia and the chance to win a little something if you know the greatest number of not-very-useful facts.

Check out the posters in the links, or contact teens@plfdpl.info (908) 757-1111x139 to find out more!
