From the Desk of the Director...

During the month of September libraries observe Banned Books Week. The annual event draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Acknowledging the Freedom to Read Statement of the American Library Association which condemns censorship of reading materials as part of our 1st Amendment Rights, the Plainfield Public Library encourages the free access to all books no matter how controversial. It is not the role of the library to limit access to books and ideas but to allow them for the free and unimpeded exchange of ideas.

Some of the most well-known books of our time have been banned or challenged by censored groups within the United States. Most of us would be surprised at some of the titles listed. Included here are a few:

  • The Color Purple by Alice Walker
  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
  • The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
  • Beloved by Toni Morrison
  • Goosebumps (children’s series) by R.L. Stine
  • Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
  • Captain Underpants (children’s series) by Dav Pilkey
  • Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • The Bluest Eyes by Toni Morrison
  • A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

It is our hope that we all embrace the differences within our community and learn from what we read as well as the people around us. The library is the first line of defense for all of us as we work together to be a kinder, informed and tolerant nation.

Please come to the library to view our display about Banned Books Week (Sept 18-24).
